Just saw a news report that toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie have poisoned the water supply for 400,000 residents of Ohio. Bottled water flew off the shelves, stocks are empty, sheeple are driving across state lines to find water. Are you ready? What if this happened to you? They are on their second day without water. Imagine if this goes on for another week.

Pollution at its finest. The far Right will probably start spewing that this algae bloom is completely natural, and God's will. Anyway, not trying to get political. I hope that there are at least somepreppers in there that are ready with their back up water supplies, and filters that are laughing at the sheeple.

Laughing quietly - very quietly. Can you imagine if word got out that so and so has a Berkey?

I'm nowhere near Lake Erie but I'm looking at adding another 500 gallon Norwesco tank to my rain catchment system!

I'm in FL, and I've Benin looking into a 1500 gallon tank for my rain catchment system.
Maybe it is wrong of me, but I think that whole Lake Erie mess is actually pretty funny. Fortunately Lake Erie is the warmest of the Great Lakes and can clean itself within 10-15 years if people just quit putting crap in it. Try telling that to the residents of Toledo, Cleveland and Erie, PA though. Maybe they should try lighting it on fire. That did wonders drawing attention to the pollution in Cleveland back in the 70's when they burned their river.

I'll have to call my Mom tomorrow and see what's going on in her area. She's in NE Ohio. I know she has rain catch barrels tho.

This article does a good job of detailing the causes. It's not pollution from homeowners causing it. The major contributor as pollution goes would be farming, mostly what and how the farm land in the area is being utilized. There are other contributing factors as well. Unfortunately changing human habits or farming methods will have no effect. http://www.vox.com/2014/8/4/5967177/why-are-toxic-algae-blooms-making-a-comeback-in-lake-erie

Berkey is a water filter company. Probably the biggest water filter company.

I like Berkey, but this system is great too. Compact and uses 5 or 6 gallon buckets as the reservoirs. Can be reverse flushed for continued use. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/06/uhu3e9em.jpg

reverse flush im assuming is just pouring water into the drainage to wash out the extra crud?

It doesn't remove chemicals???
If you live in a rural area when they use fertilizers or pesticide have your water checked! Nitrates from fertilizers can be very bad. Insecticides dissolved in water can be worse.

Pushing water through the filter in reverse to flush it out.

I have a theory. I think everybody in and around the area bought one of those electric juicer machines and found out how awful the crap is once you blend it all together. They did like I did and poured it down the drain. No matter what you blend it always seemed to come out that nasty green color.
