As the pandemic makes human interactions more dangerous, retailers are turning to robots to perform essential tasks in their stores to cut costs and reduce the spread of coronavirus.

But the growing push to automate could reduce the number of retail jobs at a time when unemployment is soaring and virus-induced lockdowns are forcing many retailers to permanently close their doors.

The grocery stores are pushing the self-checkout around here too. The clerks will grab you by the arm when you're standing in line and tell you they'll help you with the self checkout. I tell them no thanks I'm retired and in no hurry, and if I wanted a job here I'd apply for one. I hate self-checkout. Heck, I'm old enough to miss "Full Service" gas stations.

Heck I swung in after work one evening and they had no cashier lines open, this one clerk was lime i can help you with the self checkout, i told him maybe if they offered me 15% off, but I am not paying the same price to do the work so they can lay people off.
I then took my cart to the front counter and told the boss here was a cart so it could be put away because there were no real lanes open. He then tried saying he would open a lane and wait on me, I told him he had lost my business i was going to a store that had cashiers and walked out. He stood there jaw open surprised.

I really hate self checkouts, but sadly they are coming more and more.

If they get it to the point where I can load my cart up with stuff, push it through the register and wait for a green light to come on to indicate my debit card has been accepted for $x...... then I just push the cart out to my truck: I'm on board with that.

If they did that to me I might help them to the floor.
