Since, though the mountains around Reno often get show measured in feet, much of this area does not. So I am saving up to purchase an Igloo Tool so I can create igloos using just inches of snowfall. I can really see their value here where we can get high winds and temps down to minus 30 degrees F, with only a little snow.

Growing up in Montana a few uncles had sled dogs. When they were out on an overnight trip they used to let the dogs start a "hole" in the snow and then finish it off. The dogs didn't seem to mind being evicted and just made another hole.

I think a fish killen shack would be more comfortable.....just my 2 cents.......

That could come in handy, the tool I mean, but seems bulky to have to lug around.

I always wondered how they made them, now I know. I liked the other Eskimo video that was suggested at the end of it too. Produced in the 50's about Eskimo hunters. Pretty cool watching all those old videos.

I made a half a snow shelter for my dog once. For his 2 am bathroom breaks. I piled up some snow with a shovel, packed it down and dug under the pile. You can also put liquid water on top and it'll freeze and give extra strength.

My cousin made an igloo once, I don't know how big he was going, but it collapsed and he couldn't get out. Just as a warning.

What that video doesn't show is that there is a low point where the access tunnel (door) is and then a shelf that is 18 to 24 inches higher on the inside of the igloo. The shelf keeps the cooler air below you and the warm air around you. A very small heat source (about the size of four candles) can keep the inside of the igloo a toasty 35F or slightly warmer. Much warmer and it starts to disappear as it melts. If you pack the space with people you don't need a fire.

There is also a small vent hole near the top of the igloo to vent the CO2 from the heat source and all those breathing bodies on the inside. Without the vent you will suffocate in short order.
