Seems like it would be a viable shelter but I have trouble taking that guy seriously. I've seen a couple of his other videos and just can't get into his stuff. Not discounting his techniques, just him that I can't take seriously.

Well it looks good, but depending on wher you are not so good. I could possibly do this for about 5 months a year.

I am not too sure whether this would work in the areas that I used to backpack but I can see its utility in some circumstances.
We were taught to use the tarp as the floor and then fold it up on the high side and over the top. That way if the whether got wet, and it often did, the water would go around the tarp in the trough or under the tarp without getting the inside wet.
The fire on the inside of your shelter is a nice touch but we always built the fire outside in a pit so there was no danger of sparks popping hot coals into the shelter. Now he might not have that problem but in the PNW Cascades and Olympic mountains the wood always pops and throws sparks where you don't want them - even with a small fire.
Build your shelter for the conditions of the area and remember to tie your pack and food stuff high in the air to keep animals out of it. Bears just love ready to eat meals wrapped in plastic - don't become a meal!
