View Full Version : Starting my long term stash - suggestions?

but what I want to do is buy a box of potato flakes, and store them for as long as possible.

They'll be stored outside in an unheated shed.
So....mylar bags? O2 absorbers?
I've never done the mylar thing so any tips on what kind of setup would be appreciated.

Also, we'll put them in metal garbage cans with tight fitting lids, unless you guys have a better idea, to keep varmints out.

We keep a 6-month supply of food, inside, to get us through winter if need be, but it's time to up our game. First up - potatoes. Next - ??

I store that stuff in plastic totes. knowing that critters can eat thru.

That's why I let the neighbors cats in

I store my smacked-up taters in Mylar with absorbers. Mine are are in the house for temperature control, not sure how they would fare outside with temperature fluctuations.

Yeah, same here. Mylar bags and o2 absorbers. Keep it all inside as the heat down here would ruin most of it.

Since it's just the 2 of us, I buy the small packets, which make a 1 meal side for 2.
Add in the fact that they are already sealed packets, and are easy to store. Just throw a bunch in a box, unless you have critter issues, then a stronger box.

I think you can get those flakes and Mylar O2 them.

They keep pretty well in their foil packs, I have used them from a few years back with no problems.

We just had a package of the Idahoan tonight with chicken for din din.

These are the foil pack ones I have on hand, buttery home style, loaded baked, roasted garlic, butter and herb.

You can repack them to eliminate the oxidizers, the flakes must be kept dry while exposed.

IF you have a Mylar sealer, you might be able to reseal the original bags after dropping in O2 eaters.

Garbage cans are good, I use 20MM ammo cans.

We seal the mylar bags with just a regular food bag sealer, similar to a FoodSaver. I gave up buying the FoodSaver brand after burning through 2 of them and just bought the commercial equivalent. We do include an O2 absorber, then into a food grade plastic bucket with a screw off lid. But we do keep them in the house. As Prepared One mentioned, I am not sure how they would do with temperature fluctuations.

If you have flakes in an open box and not hermetically sealed,

when packing them in a Mylar bag you will need to add desiccant packs to the O2 packs.

Alternate is to run them through a dehydrator and then into the Mylar with the O2 packets while still warm.

If moving them out of their Mylar packages and into another package,

just throw in the O2 eaters and seal quickly.

The enemy here is moisture,

a little moisture and some microscopic molds floating in the air is all you need for a disaster.

Don't put up too large a package, just what you may eat in a weeks time.

I can't give you any hints on a sealer,

I bought a commercial one 20+ years ago and the nametag is long gone, it is a 220 volt model..

It was a couple of hundred bucks IIRC.

My potatoes are continuous. Still edible now, and soon to be in dirt again.
