View Full Version : Fuel Rationing

As you might be aware, Colonial Pipeline was hit by a ramsomware attack and is down. Colonial execs won't speculate when it will be back up.

I sent a text to my leadman, who has a "hobby farm" (I didn't know hobbies required so much effort) and after the storm passed, he shot off to buy off-road diesel.
He was only allowed to buy half of what he wanted. Farmers are being rationed by half.

Heads up if you live on the East Coast and Southeast. Fill your cans and tanks while you can.

Top off any large tanks you have. I just did fuel oil in home. I need to get some 55-gal drums for non-e10 gas, and smaller ones for 100LL av gas.

Just topped up the truck and filled my other tanks. I had to anyway. Mostly for the tractor and lawn equipment and hurricane season.

The station I go to has about 250 pumps. They were busy but no lines and apparently plenty of fuel.

I don’t think this has really hit the panic porn media full cycle so most are obvious to this situation.

My hope is that it get fix shortly and this amounts to nothing.

With that said, the fact it’s last 4 days and Valero has chartered tankers to store fuel is worrisome.

A Colonial Pipeline borders the Northern Edge of Slippy Lodge, hence Colonial has their own lock on our Access Rd. One year they did maintenance on some of the Valves and shut down the flow of whatever is flowing through their pipes.

One evening my neighbor and I looked down the open valve/hole into the pipeline itself and wondered if SHTF and the flow stopped for good, could we open the valve and siphon off some of what is in the pipe?

I should research that.

Anyway, trucks and jeep filled up, tanks of gas and diesel also filled. Maybe something interesting this way comes????

Slippy, a single line may be dedicated 100% to one product, or most likely this,

Diesel, avgas, Jet a-b, 100 LL auto, kerosene may be sent in a single large line,

they put one fuel in right behind the other no pig to separate them.

The mixed types are bled off and sold to companies who specialize in the mixed stuff.

Pigs are for cleaning the lines and have special traps to take them out.

I can't get to fuel one Jeep until tomorrow.

I’ll have to ride by the station out there tomorrow after work I could’ve sworn the NG and the gas/diesel/av gas lines all ran through there. Maybe it’s just affecting the one part. Considering how many power plants run off of NG that would be a worse case scenario even more so than the transportation fuel sector.

I'm not sure where "there" is, but that lines run through the same area doesn't mean they are all owned by the same company.
That doesn't mean that the NG companies won't be targeted at another time. I'm expecting the power grid to be targeted in the not too distant future.

I live, maybe 2 mile from the colonial lines in my area. I’m pretty sure they are all colonial anyway. I know the station I’m speaking of is. Anyway I’m like you. I’m expecting the grid to be hit at any given time. Although this happening makes me think it may not be a direct grid attack but could potentially be an attack on the fuel supply for it.

They have not declared an emergency here, yet.

Will see what the prices are around 4PM today after my second COVID shot is done.

We get our gas the BJ's club station, the pump prices are the lowest around even for non club members.

As a member, we get a dime and more off of the listed price at the pump.

One Jeep is full and the second will be on half when I get there with it.

All gas cans and tanks are full already.

The gas in the jeeps will last about 6 weeks each, we don't go anywhere to start with.

We are hermits!

Supposedly we are north of that line and not getting fuel from it.

I know that a lot of our fuel comes out of Providence RI., huge fuel depot there filled from ships.

There are underground lines in this town, but I don't remember who owns them,

and sure as hell not going to go look at them!

And as far as using old gas in generators NEVER! You want a generator to run when you want it to run. And NEVER store gas in a genny, run it dry/drain. Probably won't hurt to run Ethanol Free Gas and add a bit of fuel additive like SeaFoam through the genny before you put it up for storage. It will clean out the moving parts and remove the gunk that gasoline powered internal combustion engines create.

No problems getting gas here, but it has been bouncing between $2.90 and $3.00 per gallon for the last couple months. I blame it on the trailer hens (snowbirds). Gas always goes up about 20 cents right after Thanksgiving and again usually in early March when the trailer hens are coming and going. This year they have stuck around for a couple months longer, I assume due to kung flu.

Backups. They can erase the infected software and use backups to restore. Maybe....

Unfortunately not always that simple. They have to figure out how far back the infections go so not to restore a backup that is also infected and therefore not fix the problem. If it’s the PLC’s and the scada systems that are infected then they may not have adequate backups and have to reload from scratch. I have some familiarity with them but not like major data center type systems.

The other question they have to answer is what other systems are infected. If they got to the root of some system or application did the hackers then get into other systems that had permissions. They could put themselves into a horrible loop.

These systems are long, large and complex. I have no doubt they are working 24/7 on this and there are some exhausted IT guy.

Well, you will have to look at it from my point of view.

Most of the deaths related to COVID were people 60 years old and above.

Look what happened in New York nursing homes.

Most fatalities here in this state if you look are in the same category.

I am 80 years old and type 2 diabetic, too much of a risk for me not to.

What are going to be the side effects? nothing long term,

I am not going to be around long term, F'K I could go typing this out.

Another, personal factor, I almost died from the regular flue about 25 years ago,

My doctor brother really insisted I get the annual flue shot again after that event,

I did what he had suggested for years, before that I shrugged them off, then started getting them,

have not had the flue since with them.

It was like suffocating having it, could hardly breathe, ran out of O2 in the blood just going to the toilet.

I laid there for a week with an O2 cannula stuck under my nose 24/7 wondering if I was going to die.

This COVID has the same effects only worse,

did not want to go through that shit again even if I did survive..

I don't need to prove any macho shit by not taking it or that I need to resist government in toto.

I hope you can accept this explanation and understand it.

Jester,

Curious, (and I'm assuming your fuel tanks are for Farm Use?) but for accounting purposes, do you allocate that fuel to each vehicle via use of a meter or does it matter?

I'd assume it matters regarding the diesel that may be designated as Off Road/Dyed? Also, does it make a difference if your vehicles are have a DOT number or not?

I was thinking about doing something like that for Slippy Lodge and I'm sure there are fuel rebates etc?

But then, if I remember correctly, don't you live in the middle of North BFE?

nope... BFE is on the paved road where we do our shopping.... we are 22 miles off that road..

It might help if we actually had some truck drivers. Right now about 30% of the OTR trucks are sitting in parking lots because there are no drivers. Apparently a lot of OTR truckers can make more money on unemployment than actually driving. Who'd a thunk?

I can't see how they could make more money. I made good money when I drove. Still, I read that the U.S. is a MILLION drivers short.

I haven't confirmed this but a trusted friend says they opened the Colonial line 3 hours ago.

Heard on the news Colonial rep said parts of it are open, but it will still take several days before fully back.

I bet this event will change some folks' perspective.

What do you want to bet that Sleepy Joe will try to take credit for resolving a crisis in our fuel delivery system? I wonder if old Dementia Joe will push to find and prosecute the Russian hackers responsible?

Read an article today that the company had been looking for a security manager for a few month and the position was vacant.

Not sure they have one but the needs a chief security officer (CSO). Many companies have one.

This should not have happened.

And it keeps getting more interesting by the day. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us next.

Probably got nervous for nothing . . . took all my 5 gallon cans . . . filled em up . . . gas and diesel yesterday.

At least I'm good for most of the summer for the mower, . . . tractors . . . and my quad. Providing of course that it doesn't go stupid from here on out.

May God bless,
Dwight

That is OK, they should have been filled already.
