I could argue either side of the debate podium regarding Electric Vehicles but I've studied up a bit on the new Ford F150 Lightning (Pro Model for $39.9k and so far I'm pretty impressed.

If you're a car guy you know electric vehicles have been around since the 1800's, I like electric vehicles and might even own one one day but I'm a combustion engine guy at heart, one thing that holds me back is charging, I don't know about you but when I travel I go further than 300 miles, where do you charge? not like they have gas style electric stations, if I'm driving down route 66 and need a charge for my Ford truck where do I stop? I will say that in Aurburn Hills Mi. at a Target store I seen charging areas for Tesla cars, I was surprised but what about my GM, Ford or? I really like the new Hummer coming out but the lack of distance and charging station options will hold me back.
I'm I missing something?
What sucks is the wife has given me the okay when this is available but I think I'll be too old before I feel like I can go anywhere without worries.

I am totally apalled at the ignorance portrayed by electric vehicle mfgrs and sellers and buyers.
1. 300 miles is just a decent road trip . . . one way . . . and you gotta charge to get back.
2. Using the saw out in the woods will use up your battery . . . and I'll just bet that will be a long walk and and expensive "tow" bill when you are rescued.
3. There is no current . . . or forseeable future . . . place to discard these batteries when they go bad . . . and they are from what I've read . . . not able to be recycled.
4. A HUGE LOT of the technology to run them comes out of chink chong china . . . and who is to say there is not a "chip" piece in it that can be turned off some day in the future . . . that would turn it off . . . dead in the water . . . not useable.
5. It costs approximately (today) 3 times the fuel to extricate the resources to build one as the thing will save over it's projected life time.
Now . . . is there anyone out there that has an honest . . . workable . . . answer for the above . . . ??
Yeah . . . didn't think so.
May God bless,
Dwight

As all Earth Worshiping Hippies from Sunny CA know..electric vehicles only moves the smoke stack from the small amount of pollution put out by modern cars to the giant coal fired and nuclear electric power generation stations. Forget hydro electric since CA is using up all the water to grow almonds. Who knows it takes a gallon of water to make one almond? Think how much water is in a gallon of almond milk? Hydrogen fuel cells are the only thing that can turn mother earth into a man made Utopia similar to the Garden of Eden but leaving God out of the loop.

https://www.gmc.com/electric/hummer-evPlus according to the article it can take up to 10-14 hours to charge the vehicle back to full so that is a lot of waiting to go 230-300 miles at a time....just saying.

Nope!
I don't like most cars/trucks made after ~1990. Most newer stuff is a cluster**** to work on, I don't want it.
Electric? ROFL!!! Where you going to plugin? Is triple AAA going to rescue you when you're SOL and stranded? What happens if there is a blackout or the grid goes down.
I guess with the new F150 you could put a genny and charging system in the bed along with a big ass fuel tank......

Some of you naysayers are missing the big picture on Electric Vehicles and by that I mean...GOVERNMENT TAX CREDIT INCENTIVES!
A of now, potential tax credits for EV are at $7500 and proposed legislation of $12,500 tax credit per EV! Of course there are some hoops to jump thru to get the max but it can be done if you are creative.
AND, if you are a small business owner, the current IRS Section 179 Equipment Purchase Tax Deduction PLUS the EV Tax Credit could make the Ford F150 Lightning one of the best returns on investment that you can make.
For example, I ran the numbers on the the Section 179 Tax Deduction PLUS the EV Credit and the Ford F150 EV Lightning (List price $40k) and it would end up costing me only $16,000 after taxes!
Considering the used car market is hot as hell, I could then flip the vehicle in a year for $30-35k and pocket a nice profit!
More things to consider...

So.. picture this.
45min wait while people charge their EV.
At home, 24 hours to get 72 miles on 120v. 13 hours to get a full charge at 240v.
A charging station for Tesla, one for ford, another for Chevy and another for Merc.
The future looks bright, doesn’t it.

That is definitely a consideration and with your brilliant business mind, it will probably work. (What you did with OfficeMax when you owned the lumber co-op was sheer genius, so there is no way I would ever doubt your ability to find a way to make a decent profit on EVs. Hell, the whole concept of starting a lumber co-op was genius.)
Just playing devil's advocate... What part is Ford/government NOT telling us about this plan? For example, how much are they going to charge to dispose of the batteries when/if they die? I have a whole pile of old laptops collecting dust in the corner because I refuse to spend the $30 each to get rid of them.

The electricity bill to charge it will cost more than the gas on an economy car. If everyone has an electric car of truck how will all that power be produced? The grids in California and Texas have already shut down because of weather or other draws the grid can't handle. This entire electric vehicle idea is undoable from the get-go. Electric bills will be insanely high.....wait for it.

People will do what they did when they started charging to dispose of tires, throw them on the side of the road in the middle of the night and let the city/county dispose of them. They'll do the same with batteries, maybe the government will require you to register your batteries and tires.

My position remains the same that it has always been. Electric vehicles are leaps and bounds ahead of internal combustion engines. Torque and horsepower of electric motors blow engines away. There is a reason all of your big locomotives that move thousands of tons of freight are ALL electric motor-driven. Ever see a Hellcat race a Tesla? I don't need engineers to produce a better electric motor. I need engineers to produce a better BATTERY. It needs to get 300 miles on a charge, and above all else, I need to be able to fully recharge it in 10 minutes or less. Do THAT, and I am sold.

Ford is also offering 2 years free charges in one of their charging stations after you buy a Ford F150 Lightning. Sounds like they keep upping the ante!
Regarding a drain on the grid, I think its pretty evident that most people will not get an EV. Hell, Tesla has sold a somewhere around 2 million vehicles (check my stat on that one, I'm going from memory) and I still rarely see one in the wild!
Plus, it seems as if the cost to charge a car is much less than the strain that microwaves, hairdryers and toaster ovens put on the grid daily!
But for me, I'm also thinking it would be a cool project to build a Solar Home Charging Station...
I'll keep my eyes and ears open and see how this Ford F150 EV thing progresses.

I think I'll stick with my good old fashioned gas guzzling truck. If I want to get across country it won't be in an electric truck. One of our corporate partners has an electric car as a company vehicle. I took a ride with him and the thing can move. I was surprised. But finding charging stations is a problem, especially once you start hitting the countryside. He has to carry different adapters for the different chargers and then there is the wait time to charge. I'll pass.

I figured someone was going to say that. My point is, a 20 cylinder, 10 liter diesel engine CANT produce enough torque to move a train, but it can run a generator, which powers an electric motor, that can easily move that train. Yes, they are hybrids, but a diesel engine alone can not make it happen.

I'm still studying up on this F150 EV and;
It appears to be the most economical full size pickup on the market today;

Also, its a backup generator for home and/or RV

And it looks good! I'd rather have the vinyl seats and floors than leather any day of the week and Ford makes the vinyl look like leather.

I have to admit, when the Lightning came out I was damn excited about it. I was not "ready to buy it" excited, but I thought this is a pretty cool thing. Having a 70-100Kw battery with a BMS and charge controller already built in, I was thinking it could do double duty as a back up power supply for our house. I was thinking about giving it a few years to work out the bugs, then consider it as part of a larger strategy for divorcing myself further from polite society.
Then I saw that video on YouTube... Yeah, I am now thinkin' my next truck is going to be a diesel, in about 2 years...

I'm right there with you, Inor. My gas F250 is fantastic and my next truck will diesel. I'd maybe buy the EV to commute and a backup power source but always have a gas/diesel for the hardwork.

As a Navy Electrician . . . I got all too much experience with them ding dong stupid batteries.
And diesels can be a real pain to get going in the nasty Ohio winters . . .
So I'm the gas guy in this conversation thread . . . and would love to be the hydrogen guy . . . but that just has not become "the" thing yet.
I'm thinking if these dingbats spent the time / money / effort in hydrogen that they have in batteries . . . we could all be driving on water.

Been a diesel guy for about 15 years, gas burner before that.
Current truck is '12 F-350 with 6.7 (Ford). 180,000 miles. Never not started in the cold (Ill./Wis. border) winters, never been plugged in. Didn't come factory with a 115 vac heater. Never left me stranded. Bone stock, all the power you realistically need. Lets see an electric truck roll a gravity wagon to the elevator, I have crossed the scale > 28,000#.
Last truck was a '03 F-350 with a 6.0 (Navistar). Had 195,000 when I got rid of it. That one did get plugged in, rattled and knocked for about 10 minutes on cold days. You could hear the turbo wine in the next county.
Negatives about newer diesels. EGR - doesn't not belong on a diesel. All sorts of problems from both trucks. Also letting your truck warm up in cold weather, yea, doesn't happen much at idle. Mine don't start making heat until about 5-8 miles in the trip. I can let it idle for 30 minutes before leaving, not even lukewarm heat.
Gas trucks - had a '96 with 351W, '81 with 400M, '79 with a 460, '78 with a 300 I-6, and a '76 with a 360.
Diesel = engine will last longer than the body (rust)
Gas - cheaper, engine will be dead before the body rusts off.
Electric = sad, but you pretend to smile because you don't want to admit EV's aren't good for trucks and you made a mistake...

In that instance . . . you are 100 % correct . . . and I'm with you there.
What needs to be developed is simply a cheap and efficient way of breaking water into H2 and O2. The H2 and the O . . . can then be piped into the cylinder . . . sparked . . . and combustion goes on . . . with water vapor being the exhaust.
I'm not the engineer who can make this happen . . . but I'm certain if the battery boys had gone this direction . . . Saudia Arabia and the rest of the towel heads would be begging for us to buy their oil at $.25 a barrel . . . to make grease, motor oil, and sewing machine oil.

I assume lithium batteries? Didn't dell computers or somebody's laptops catch fire a few years back?
About 20 years ago I was working at a shop, building a machine to process lithium for implantable batteries - think heart defibrillators and pacemakers. We built a 24 x 24 dry room, maintained about 0.5 to 0.3% relative humidity, lithium gets goofy when wet. Room even had an airlock chamber to get in.
Little fact: I took scrap lithium (think aluminum foil) wadded it up in a ball, and took it outside to the chip hopper, about 2' deep in rain water. Chunked it in. It catches fire when it gets wet, pops, explodes, I had a wad about the size of a plum that shot out of the dumpster and landed about 20' away. Burns green and toxic. Got a small lungful of the fumes. Thought I was going to the ER, couldn't get my lungs to quit burning. But sure, let's surgically implant that into people's bodies.
Another project used the same dry room. Made a battery for a secondary detonator for missiles, maybe the patriot missiles? If the missile hit it's target and did not explode, the shock activated the secondary detonator. It would explode when the batter went dead. Our batter was designed for a 3-6 second life. Did not want our tech to fall into turban hands... L3. Socom, maybe you have heard of this.
So when I hear of the fire potential, not surprised...

If you want to have some fun, take an 18650 battery cell (the same cells in most cordless tools and laptops) and drive a galvanized nail through it. Don't use a hammer like you would driving a nail into a board; instead drive the nail all the way through a scrap of 2x4 and hit the battery cell with the nail in the 2x4 like a club. It's pretty cool to watch. Obviously, do it outside, well away from anything flammable.
Lithium battery cells are more power-dense than dynamite.

Our dry room had a removable wall to bring in and out larger components or complete machines. When we needed to open it up all of the coiled lithium went into a vessel that we purged with nitrogen and sealed air-tight. Definitely serious shit...

THIS NEEDS TO GO VIRAL
For those of you that think electric vehicles are the answer- this is a true story from a farmer in the Midwest- and I’m reposting it-
A close friend farms over 10,000 acres of corn in the mid-west. The property is spread out over 3 counties. His operation is a "partnership farm" with John Deere. They use the larger farm operations as demonstration projects for promotion and development of new equipment.
He recently received a phone call from his John Deere representative, and they want the farm to go to electric tractors and combines in 2023. He currently has 5 diesel combines that cost $900,000 each that are traded in every 3 years. Also, over 10 really BIG tractors.
JD wants him to go all electric soon.
He said: "Ok, I have some questions. How do I charge these combines when they are 3 counties away from the shop in the middle of a cornfield, in the middle of nowhere?" "How do I run them 24 hours a day for 10 or 12 days straight when the harvest is ready, and the weather is coming in?" "How do I get a 50,000+ lb. combine that takes up the width of an entire road back to the shop 20 miles away when the battery goes dead?"
There was dead silence on the other end of the phone.
When the corn is ready to harvest, it has to have the proper sugar and moisture content. If it is too wet, it has to be put in giant dryers that burn natural or propane gas, and lots of it. Harvest time is critical because if it degrades in sugar content or quality, it can drop the value of his crop by half a million dollars or more. It is analyzed at time of sale. It is standard procedure to run these machines 10 to 12 days straight, 24 hours a day at peak harvest time. When they need fuel, a tanker truck delivers it, and the machines keep going.
John Deere's only answer is "we're working on it." They are being pushed by the lefty Dems in the government to force these electric machines on the American farmer. These people are out of control. They are messing with the production of food crops that feed people and livestock... all in the name of their "green dream."
Look for the cost of your box of cornflakes to triple in the next 24 months...”
Wake up! Stand up! Speak up!
Let's return sanity to our nation.

Here in Libtown PDR, I have hardly seen any charging stations around in the big city or the towns abutting it.
One place, I must say has 20? stations, never in the last year, that I have drove by them
was there anyone on charge, and in the middle of the day.
I think I may have seen a couple on charge in other locations.
I will pay closer attention to them tomorrow when we are out shopping.
I think Brandon needs one of those charger heads shoved up his ass and put on quick charge.
Then again, some batteries will not take a charge again no matter what. FJB!

Agreed 110%!
When the Lightning was first announced, I was pretty excited. Mostly I liked the idea of a huge battery that I could use as backup for the house that could also be used for transportation. But if it cannot even do basic "truck things", it is not much good. I guess I'll go back to my original plan of waiting a couple more years, then getting a big honkin' diesel.

I've owned my F250 Super Duty for nearly 3 years now and I will never not have a 3/4 Ton or 1 ton Pick up! It simply is too versatile and powerful and gets done what I need to get done with power to spare.
Having said that, I still like the idea of an alternative fuel source vehicle that fits a niche. Technology continues to improve so it bears keeping an eye on EV.

I was a Summer League Youth Basketball Coach once.
It was the summer before I went to High School so I was in the 8th grade,14 yrs old. I couldn't afford a YMCA Membership and Dad sure as shit wasn't going to pay for one, so I got a free membership but the catch was I had to "coach" a bunch of little kids in basketball!
Y'all kinda know me so you can guess what kind of cluster-puck that was! I realized at the first practice that these little kids didn't give a crap about basketball and didn't have the brain development to learn anyway, so I just tossed all the basketballs on the court and let them run wild for an hour until they got hot, tired and thirsty!
Hindsight? I was a freakin' GENIUS! Most of the parents loved it because their kid was tired but there was one or two parents that got all pissy and complained. Other than that I got nothing about basketball...
Anyway, I got a free membership to the Y for the summer and that was good enough for 14 year old me!

May God bless,
Dwight

I'm currently tinkering around with some electronics stuff to create a couple new tools for use at home. Through the course of my tinkering, a thought occurred to me...
To manipulate voltages on various circuits, we use resisters. The way resisters work is they basically "absorb" excess voltage. That "absorbed" voltage is given off as heat energy. Has anybody in the "green retard" camp bothered to ask the question: Doesn't the heat energy given off by the resisters (and LEDs, coils, etc.), contribute to "global warming"?!?! Or maybe they have decided that is a "different kind of heat" that doesn't count... Just sayin'.

Ha! Microprocessors are even worse! Notice that most need to have a heatsink of some sort to dissipate the excess heat. Now, how many computers does the modern car have on board? 3-6 at least. How many computers does an EV have? All drawing energy from those batteries, and all dissipating heat. Hmmm:thinking:
