Part of Surviving is being ready. Both my house and Mother in laws house all use the same heating and AC units. Few months back I decided to order a complete unit as a back up should one fail. They are 20 years old 18 years old and 16 years old.
There were delays in getting it shortages ect. But it is due to show up today. Wood back up works . But I prefer the gas heat.
Being the same unit either parts could be swapped out or the entire unit in place in no time.

Speaking of staying warm..its been cold in Texas and my hands freeze out in the elements. I have pocket hand warmers for my gloves but think I need electric gloves. Heard none of them work very well does anybody know for sure? Thanks.

Ones for riding you can attach to power or the battery type.
The one that use batteries work but not for long. They are not cheap to buy.

I used the battery operated gloves when hunting once. To me, not worth the effort or the price.

It was surprisingly cold here yesterday. Never got out of the 40’s with a wind. That’s cold for us.

I prefer a Cold & Dry Climate (Mountain West) vs a Humid and Wet Climate (Coastal South) in the winter.

20 degrees with 20% humidity in the mountains is much more tolerable than 45/50degrees with 70% humidity and rain in the south and eastern US. Humidity makes cold weather "Bone chilling"

Yeah. I agree. I lived in Colorado a good chunk of my life and 32 degrees there is very different than 32 degrees here.

It has been cold here the last few days, 6" of snow yesterday temp was 26 degrees.

This morning it is 12 degrees, sunny out, firing up blower after posting this.

Temp will drop to MINUS 6 BELOW ZERO or lower by Tuesday morning! just checked the oil line heaters,

the #2 oil will jell up if it gets lower than the -6 degrees.

At around -15 degrees the propane has a hard time gasifying, that is my secondary heat source.

Fail safe is the wood stove as always, do have a few Kerosun heaters that work well.

The humidity here makes all temp ranges suck, I live on a lake which makes it worse.

My departed brother had a leather/sheepskin coverall set that was electrically heated,

used it in the winter when riding his motorcycle.

It was a war surplus unit that was used in the B-17's and B-24's for winter flying.

He added a second battery to give it the needed 24 volts.

As I get older, the cold really bothers me more each year.

2 below with a faint breeze on Friday. If was windy before noon I don't know, I waited until it got to 10 degrees before going out.

Down to 27 % in the Pig, supposed to get a LPG delivery between yesterday and next Friday.

I'll find out what the price is now, at least I prepaid for as much as they would let me.

I’ve lived/visited many places in the word, both hot and cold and have been in blizzard whiteouts in the mountains…

But the coldest I’ve ever been in my entire life was in January in Chicago. It was humid, the wind was blowing and it was 5 degrees. I had on a leather duster over a wool suit, gloves, scarf, etc. and I was frozen.

My firm wanted me to move to Chicago. No freaking way (for many reasons)

Funny you should say that PS!

It was probably 1986 and I was transferred to St Louis from Texas and IL was in my sales territory. I remember Mrs Slippy taking a trip with me in early January and we rode by Wrigley and took a picture of the Wrigley Field Sign and Temperature was displayed on the sign; 4 degrees F. It was BRUTAL! Thank God I was promoted a few years later and transferred back to Texas!

A few years later, me and Mrs S took one of our first trips to Wyoming in December and rode snowmobiles in -10 degrees at high altitude. I remember taking my cover-alls down at the shoulders to eat lunch with nothing but a sweater and undershirt and it was a piece of cake compared to Chicago at 4 degrees!

You are getting hit with the same cold front that I am.

They are calling for -6 here Tuesday, will probably go lower right where I am, it usually does.

We just got done filling our rice barrel with 150 pounds of white rice, it is under the kitchen table.

We bought a 100 pounds Friday for restocking.

Only have 5 cord put away this year, way too much other shit got in the way.

Will clean and lube the AK's and M-4's when that cold hits us,

not going outside except for the mail and running both Jeeps.

Everything else is on a trickle charger.

Omni antenna will have to wait until next weekend to install.

-15 here... the general rule all year here is "if it ain't windy, it ain't cold". my wife has one of those ororo heated vests. runs off a rechargeable battery pack, heated pockets and such. she loves it!

my old company where I worked decades ago had an office in Williston. The guys would tell us about the cold. Was in Tulsa at the time and that was balmy by comparison

I was bitching earlier this week because the nighttime lows were in the high 10's and low 20's. (Of course the daytime highs were in the 50's and 60's all week.)

Then I thought back to living in Minnesota with highs this time of year at -5 or -10. I don't miss it a bit!

Chicago winters are brutal for that reason. Humidity. It can sink deep into the bones and I don't miss those winters not one little bit . Denver on the other hand, can be extremely cold, but very dry. I can handle those much easier. Houston can be the same as Chicago almost, not as cold but humid, 35 or 40 degrees, wet and rainy, it soaks to the bone.

Ah..but the only problem with Denver.. is Denver. (Trust me, I lived near there for years and saw how the commifornians ruined it)

But dry cold is much better than wet cold!

Racheal was a paramedic in Denver back in 80's, 90's. They actually did a book about Denver General shortly after she left.
"The Knife and Gun Club"
You wouldn't think such a pretty city could have such a dark side.

Yes, that’s the term we used back then. I was there in the. 70’s and 80’s and saw the beginning of the turn with the city.

I can remember cruising 16th street..then they made it a mall. And it was lovely. Now 16th mall is nothing but bum’s, druggies and panhandlers.

Oh yes, The Commiefornians ruined Denver and Boulder. They are nothing but socialist cesspools now. It's a shame. Pretty country. I lived there for about 3 years or so.
