For 99% of the population - it is going to take a lot of practice. First of all, people need to know how to tie a bowline normally -- forget the one-handed stuff for awhile. My dad taught me when I was five. It is very simple to do with what I call a "slap and twist" motion, but very hard to describe to someone else. With practice, you won't need to do the "up through the hole, round the tree, back down the hole" thingy. You should get familiar enough so that you can do it blindfolded or do it behind your back.

Then -- you are ready to attempt the one-handed tie in the video.
