I sharpen mine on PO's stones.

Depending on the condition of the blade, several ways can be used.

Good steel or shit steel? makes a difference.

If the blade is real rough, a belt sander will reform the edge, then oil stones will finish the job.

I have a double sided oil stone with coarse and fine sides, I don't know if they are made anymore.

The one I have was my fathers from back in the 40s.

Some knives today need a diamond hone to do the job.

I have a lapping plate that is used with diamond slurry to sharpen my American Optical automatic microtome blades,

I use it sometimes to get an edge on tool steel blades.

Good wet stones. If edge is crap start with a coarse carborundum (sp?).

Diamond stones are good too, pricey, and you still need several grits.

An old belt works to take off the last tiff on the edge.

Depends on the knife. A hard kraut knife needs a Tinker and a wheel. I nice Swiss knife needs just a touch of the steel. I have near a full set but dont usually take them hunting since I am too old and lazy to hunt lol.

As a former collector, dealer, designer, and eventual producer of switchblades in the early 90's (American Tactical Supply M4 Auto, for the military and law enforcement) I can attest with some authority that in general, gen-u-wine Italian switchblades are crap. Oh, I think they're sexy as hell, growing up seeing them in movies. I collected a lot of the old ones back in the day. As an actual weapon though, they are garbage. The steel in them is terrible. It's only useful as a bayonet, because you can't get a good edge on it. I'll take a Gerber Mark II over an Italian switchblade any day of the week. And guess what? Don't even have to push a button, they're already open. Oops... did I just channel The Tourist? ;)

I never understood his constant fascination with the mall. I always thought maybe I missed some important detail that happened at a mall. Going to the mall seemed like a big deal that I was supposed to be impressed by. After a while I figured maybe he was a fag that wanted to sit on Santa's lap.

Well, if you decide to get one, go to a knife show or shop where you can try several of the same model. The tolerances on an out-the-front are critical, and some made by even the same manufacturer can have a bit of wobble, or poor lockout. See that the blade locks out securely, and try to wiggle the blade once it does. It won't be as rigid as a tang knife obviously... but it should lock out with a bare minimum of play.

My M4 knife was actually farmed out for production to Benchmade in Clackamas at first (back when Les deAsis was still around R.I.P) so I was in his facility often. Knives were cut out on CAD machines back then, and some of these guys don't stop production often enough to re-calibrate their machines. Check the tolerances on maybe 10 of them and pick the best one.

I am with ya Inor, if I am shelling out 500 bucks it better go bang. I carry a good quality auto, maybe 150 bucks worth that has lasted me going on 6 or 7 years now. They are good to have but if it comes down to a fight I am looking to the gun rather then a knife. I am to old to be dicking around with knife fights. I'll just put a bullet in ya and call it a day.

I had one of those ITI jobs back in the 50s, as said, it was junk and the whole assembly was weak.

I got it from my "bad boy" cousin who was 3 years older than me.

I did not carry it or any other "fighting knife", I carried a WW2 bring back Browning 25 auto.

Today I carry a Gerber folder for utility purposes and a 45 auto for defense.

Those things are outlawed in this state have been since I was a kid.

Very early on I challenged him and one of his statements.

They have a nice one with black scales and brushed stainless hardware. It is a damn sharp looking knife (pun intended). But then, so is the traditional wood scales with brass...

Funny about different state laws. The Federal law banned their import, and the transferring across state lines in the Switchblade act of 1958. We got around that by following one of the exceptions in the act: being "bona fide" dealers to law enforcement and military personnel, units, departments, and agencies. We required a photocopy agency, military, or department ID.

I used to do the Oregon Knife show every year for about 15 years. Around 1994 or so, I Had a treasury agent once look up and down my two 8 foot tables of switchblades with a scowl. Wanted to know the source of my products. I had to remind him once they are in Oregon, they're perfectly legal. And that I bought all my knives from customers who walked through to sell at various gun shows over the years... right here in Oregon as well. And that we were manufacturing one too. He was extremely agitated that he could not bust me.

I was chatting with my friends Al Mar (R.I.P. buddy, you made awesome knives) and Denny Hansen when he approached. Denny was the editor of S.W.A.T. Magazine back then, and showed the agent the new issue with my knife on the cover... and my feature story about sales to Law Enforcement in another issue a few months previous. He stormed off fuming.

Similar things would occur at the Soldier of Fortune show in Vegas every year. Agents there surrounded by all sorts of class III weapons, and their panties all in a twist over switchblades LOL.

The individual states made their own crazy laws. Here in Oregon, you can manufacture them, buy them, sell them, and collect them... just not carry it LOL.

I don't know, one whole half of the store is filled with nothing but cases of knives. I have yet to roam freely among them as I have had more pressing needs when we were there, but one day..............................

What made him look real tough was his scarred up face from going through the windshield of his 1949 Ford.

Told everyone the scars were from knife fighting and that he won every fight!

The Marines straightened him out, got out of the marines and used the GI bill to get an education,

he had the facial scars removed with plastic surgery, I did not recognize him after the surgery, looked normal.

Became an engineer in charge of maintenance for Northrup Aircraft facilities, he did marry the Northrup vice presidents daughter.

Small world eh? My little brother is retired from Northrup, as I likely mentioned before, but still consults. He has a degree in physics, but worked mostly as an engineer...he developed optics for the military satellites.

Wow! OK, one of you scoot over, I'm coming along too.

I used to do the OKCA knife show in Eugene every year... biggest knife show west of the Rockies. Huge. At that yearly 3 day show, I would make thousands in sales. The trick is leaving the show with the money LOL. I usually bought at least one knife for myself... and I had expensive tastes. A Vallotton custom made switchblade could set you back 3 grand back then. I tried to stay away from their table.
