Hey guys,

Any advice on a vacuum sealer? I want freeze corn and beef.

We have been using this one for about 10 years. It has been a real workhorse as we use it a LOT. On a scale of 1-10, I would score it a 273.

This is the one we got this year.
So far it has worked well for the garden and for meats we buy from the bulk butcher in town.
I can’t really comment on how well it holds the food in vacuum over time because we have just started stocking the freezer.
It seems to work well.

I’ve been vac sealing for about 10 years. The quality of the bags is very important. Cheap bags are usually thinner and will not perform as well as thicker bags. We use the more expensive bags and double seal each package. I’ve had excellent results at preventing any freezer burn for at least a year or more. Some packs of veggies are still good at two years.

I got a cheap-o made by ZipLock. I dont think they make them anymore. It has worked great for me for years.

Meats and fresh things go into the freezer, dried things on the shelf.

As a side note, the vac sealer works great for paint brushes too! When we were building M.T. Acres, we had about 3 months where we were finishing woodwork and cabinetry almost constantly. Rather than cleaning the brushes at the end of each day, we vac sealed them wet. The next day, or even several days after, they were fine to use. We probably saved $200 on mineral spirits just from that.

We learn as we go. I remember as a newbie prepper lo those many years ago storing my first pails of food in 5 gallon buckets. Of course, I bought the 5 gallon mylar bags too... and 02 absorbers, and desiccant packs. Filled them with rice, with beans, etc... and proceeded to use a board and an iron to seal them up. About the time I was rotating out the first buckets, it occurred to me that filling the bucket with quart sized sealed bags was better, as it didn't expose the whole bucket upon opening. Duh.
