Started construction on my new chicken coop today. It came in a kit from Carolina Coops. This is a very high end, well thought out kit. I decided to go with a kit because, frankly, I am no carpenter. (Many of you may remember my struggles with the prepper pantry installation.) I am fighting the weather, because it pours down rain every single afternoon here at 2 o'clock. You could set your watch by it. Plus, I am working outdoors, and it is currently 97 degrees, and 90% humidity. Lots cool down water breaks. I'll get some pics up soon.

I've seen a few from them and they're nice. Good luck with the set up.

Very, very nice Sparky. How many cluckers is it designed for?

With the crazy lumber and wire prices you may have come out better with the kit.
Our run and house cost 3x what it would have a years before i built it.

Nice looking chicken shack

Nice is right!!

So do you have to cook your birds before you eat them or just season them up a bit like we do here?

As I was taught-

Each chicken requires 10 square feet of yard, and 12" of roost bar space.

The henhouse has 2 X 6' roost bars, so that means 12 chickens. However, the yard is 18' X 6'= 108 square feet. I wouldn't put more than 10 chickens in it.

Just pluck the feathers off. The eggs come out hard-boiled.

Managed to get the painting 90% done, and the roof on, but it was dark when we finished. The rain was a real buzz-kill today. I'll get some progress pics in the morning.

Was in your neck of the woods for a week. I actually stood out in the rain to remember what it was and what it felt like.

Ps.. and damn nice coop and run. Make sure the critters (raccoons) can’t dig under it.

I dug a giant hole, and built a 24" high wall underground all around the base. Filled the foundation with 12" of engineered stone for drainage, and then 12" of composted mulch for the chickens to dig in. Anything that wants to dig under will have to go down at least 2 feet, then through stone.

When are the birds coming?

Already have a couple. They are free ranging and sleeping in a little Tractor Supply coop right now. Moving them into the new coop tomorrow evening. Got 8 more chicks on order from Murry McMurry. They should be here in early October.

How goes the chicken endeavors Sparky?

Doing great. Getting 2 eggs a day, with only two hens and a rooster. The rooster is.... I won't say friendly, but he ain't too bad. 8 new chicks arriving from Murray McMurray tomorrow. All females. I have already lined up a local restaurant to buy my excess eggs for their "farm to table" menu. Chickens love their coop. They get let out to free range on the weekends, and return to their coop at night on their own.

Next you need to get into the meat chickens. They are even easier to raise than egg chickens because they do not do anything except eat and shit. We leave the gate for the chicken yard open and the meat birds do not even go out. Plus, you only keep them for about 3 months.

These guys are awesome for meat birds. (We also use McMurray for egg chickens, but the Freedom Rangers are freakin' great for meat.)
