The pull tap mechanism for the ceiling fan light in the playroom broke so the wife starts sending me texts with new ceiling fans she thinks we should buy. All of them in the $150. range. So I say "Screw that noise!" I tell her I can fix it and make it look new for way cheaper.

You really can do this with stuff in your own garage and make it even cheaper. All I had to buy was the new pull string mechanism and we opted for new light covers. Everything else I already had.

Pull string mechanism = $2.97
New light covers (4 pack) = $16.99

I was going to take the whole thing down but figured that was way more work than I wanted to do so I disassembled the fan leaving the motor attached to the beam.

Cleaned everything off and soaked most of the parts for a bit to make sure they were really clean. Dried everything and then painted the motor shroud, fan blade brackets and fly wheel. I was going to paint the blades but again more work than I wanted to do and the faux wood look they already had went with the farmhouse look we were going for.

So, all and all, a few hours and $20. later here's the results.

'Atta boy!!! Never buy what you can build/rebuild from spare parts!

You are well on your way to becoming a true "Garage Logician". Being a Garage Logician should be the ultimate goal of every real man.

The Garage Logician's creed: Everything in life worth figuring out, can be figured out sitting in your garage sifting through the nuts and bolts of life.

Way to go Sas! That's what I like to see!

About 20 years ago, T-Woman 1066 was going to take a shower, went to pull the knob to shift the water from the tub spout to the shower head, it came off in her hand, rusted out. I admired her birthday suit, said gimme about 40 mins. Went to the shop, grabbed a piece of stainless, and machined a replacement knob. This was about 10PM on a Saturday night, nowhere to get one that time of night. Problem solved.

Hero for about 30 mins... as usual!

They go up to 30' diameter.

One of our warehouses at work has one.
It moves so much air that it has to be wired in to shut off if the fire alarm trips.
