It makes no sense whatsoever to trade my perfect for this old lady 2011 Subaru Outback straight across for a 1991 Jeep that I have to climb into, that has plastic windows, no A/C, 5-speed, 4x4, and 35k more miles on it than my car! No sense whatsoever!!!

Which means... that's exactly what I'm gonna do. :D

I have a 2006 Trailblazer with 112K MI miles with no rust on body panels on it, and bought a 2003 Envoy rust free a couple months ago with less than 80 K, that was $4800 to start with $2K already into it.

The new car payment would be less than keeping up 2 Government Motors vehicles

Me . . . PO . . . and MountainGirl only need AAA . . . the winch is more for decoration or pulling the zero turn out of the muddy ditch.

You other folks can go pull yourself up an 89 degree slope . . . pull boulders up on the trailer if you want . . . besides that is too sweaty to do . . . and there is no A/C in the outback of Tx.

As long as mods has been brought up, if you do a lift, double cardon joints at both ends of each drive shaft will save you headaches.

Thinking on it, does that year Jeep have a front drive shaft or something like the stupid floating axle chevy went with?

My thoughts, if you get a winch, put a receiver hitch on the front and back, and a winch that will accept it. I've had to run cable under my axles to pull myself backwards out of a tough spot, 68 chevy 4x4

I have a 4,500lb. Superwinch on my Rhino. And I bought a 9,500 lb. Smittybilt winch off Amazon for my car trailer. That 9,500 Smittybilt would be perfect for your Jeep. It was around $325.00 when I bought it.

I put front & rear receiver hitches on my Rhino. Really works great for moving my small utility and boat trailers around by pushing instead of backing them around.

When I mention I look around for best price, at ammoseek and wikiarms , after I add to cart, the stinking shipping is almost the same as the cost of the ammo??!!
How do you get away with bragging about your price per round, then spank you on shipping? Lots of places offer free shipping. Still, do the math , less cost per round.

Rock Auto... the 21st century version of JC Whitney (catalog). haha

Hell, I have used both! And you are right, diversity and economic!

The biggest thrill I got from them was when I got a roller cam and rollers for a 421 Pontiac.

Here back in the 50s-60s you could not buy parts for any automotive unit,

the stores would not sell them to you unless you were in the trade.

This girl I knew, a good friend, no romantics, ran a store for her family part time.

She would tell the sales clerks to serve me.

I use to buy plenty from Whitney too, mostly racing stuff.

I got all the parts for the Jeeps' suspension from rock auto this last week.

I forgot the shocks, put in another order, seeing it was going to rain all week, no workie in rainie.

They were here the next day in the afternoon!!! No, I did not use premium shipping, just cheapest.

That coil spring mount was $75 and change from them and $170 from Advanced Auto 5 miles away from me.

It still had to be ordered from Advanced with a weeks shipping time.

The spring support and related parts were all Moog parts, not knock offs.

I have bought alternators, water pumps, thermal fans, caliper rebuild parts and much more from Rock.

I too have had no problems with Rock, just my stupidity with the computer at times.

Put in an order by CC, it was flagged by the CC company, had to do a code thing sent to phone which I don't have myself.

Problem was the flagging was at the bottom of the page and not on the screen, missed it,

Five days later I occurred to me that I saw no order confirmation, or ship notice, migraine got in the way order day.

Went back to the page and there it was waiting for a code! Used kids phone as usual for it.

Shit, we have more or less run parallel lives.

Shit, we have more or less run parallel lives.

Seems that way! 30 years ago, hotrodding was alot different. More hanging out finding crap at the junkyards, more fabricating and making your own stuff. I used to convert carbureted manifolds to EFI. Welded in solid aluminum bungs, machined them for bosch injectors, then made a adaptor from Holley squarebore to whatever the EFI throttlebody was. Bolted fuel rail mounts to the adapter, made my own fuel rails in a jig. Welded. I made my own roller rockers, pedestal mount. SBF. Made the air intake tube to the mass air meter, made and welded O2 bungs to header collectors. Custom trans crossmembers to clear oversize exhaust, custom mounts for coil overs, all sorts of stuff. Main stud girdles, windage trays, solid motor mounts, underdrive pulleys and more.

Now kids don't do that stuff anymore. Take it to the tuner, swipe the CC, tell the world how badass your nissan / honda / bmw or what ever is!

Wish I had a camera phone back then, would have alot of pictures to share. Did keep a prototype rocker arm as a conversation piece in my toolbox.

I did a lot of fabrication myself, with either a stick or gas welding.

There was no MIG or TIG back then.

The first TIG I saw was a cabinet job, like a Trinco blasting cabinet filled with inert gas.

I did mine in the 50s and 60s, a little bit earlier than you.

There was no EFI or any electronic crap when I did my thing, shit passed me by.

Much of my work was done at the local welding shop, it was about 500 yards from my house.

They were real good to me, showed me how to gas and stick weld when I was 12 or 13.

I use to help them out with stuff as a sort of payment for their assistance, they never asked me for any money.

They were real happy when I could drag something into my workplace and do machining on it.

Never thought of taking pictures of anything I did or built.

^^^ A lot of trucks come with tow hooks on the front, why?, you chain up short as you can and the downward pressure makes for better traction/pulling power. Trying to pull from the back of a pickup is just stupid, doesn't take a lot of physics knowledge to figure this out. If there is not weight on the wheels that are doing the work, you just spin out. Just fyi, I've done my share of doing stupid stuff, guilty as hell, you finally figure it out. Kinda counter intuitive, but you can pull a lot more chained up to to front vs the back.

Different from towing a boat/trailer, just not the same forces in play. Plus you can see what the hell is giong on when you pull from the front.

Maybe I'm just talking jibberish, you decide.

Close friend bought a '79 CJ5 with the 258. We pulled it, in went a built 350 chevy. He put 35's on it, didn't have no money. He had me pull the axles, cut the leaf spring perches off, which were mounted under the axle and mount them on top. He read an article about pinion angle, so all the focus was on making sure that was good, 1-3 degrees. We were a couple of 20 year old dumbasses back then, never considered caster angle on the front axle. Fired it up, quickly discovered that about 25 degrees negative caster dam-near guaranteed a rollover after about 15 mph when steered sharp!

Ahh, the good-ole-days!

Side note: that 258 I-6, which was AMC IIRC, used Ford Duraspark II ignition and wiring harness. When we put in the 350 Chebbie, I used his old harness on my 4 cyl oval track Mustang, 2.3 I-4.

Had a buddy at work with a CJ and a lift kit, every year he had to replace the u-joints in the front drive shaft, told him he needed double cardon joints at both ends, he didn't listen. He finally got tired of messing with it and sold it. Such a simple fix, and you'd have something you'd be happy with. There are some principles that folks are unable to grasp.

We're doing the Title swap thing today - YAY! - and I'm really looking forward to this. :)

I won't be doing any off-roading; just to town & back as needed. PO kinda thinks I'm nuts - trading a great car for an old Jeep - and that's okay, lol. Mostly it's because I don't have a lot of driving years left and I wanna do it in something I love. I've got paint touch-up and amber lens covers coming, and I might get some side-steps down the road, but otherwise she's good to go.

He finally got tired of messing with it and sold it. Such a simple fix, and you'd have something you'd be happy with. There are some principles that folks are unable to grasp.

The more angle a U-joint gets from a straight line, the velocity of the shaft changes. 2x per revolution. So if the driveshaft is spinning at 600 rpm, the angular compensation of the u-joint accelerates for 90 degrees, decelerates for 90, then repeats the process per revolution. That's why when you look at a driveshaft, the yokes are welded 90 degrees apart on each end. Trying to cancel out this effect.

That is why CV - Constant Velocity joints came to be. That accel/decel doesn't exist in that mechanism. I spent year 2 and 3 of my machining career at the company that made Rockford Constant Velocity components. Made yokes and bearing cages by the hundreds of thousands!

The double cardon joint was new to me, but I looked it up, definitely makes sense. Thx.

Nice thing with the jeep, is they have a very good following of replacement parts going back way older than that. Hopefully that lived its life south of the rust belt. Up here, they look more like this..

Congrats!! You are going to love it. Btw, they are easy to work on too and as has been mentioned, there a ton of aftermarket parts and equipment for you to go nuts on.

My new bestop soft top just arrived and I’m looking forward to putting it on. I also just re-conditioned the center console (saved a few hundred $$).

Thanks! And I love it already, lol. The two amber lens covers & housings came today, and I took the old one's off with PO's help twisting the bulb assembly out. I just didn't have the strength in my hands and he twisted it right off like a bottle-cap, lol. The touch-up paint comes tomorrow; prolly show up while we're in town licensing etc. I am going to have some side-steps put on - oh - and also have that whole plate taken off the front bumper when the winch goes bye-bye. I've cleaned the inside front - and it's so nice to have the dials. There's not one LED to be found. Yay! I think you're right about going nuts on the aftermarket stuff. Wow, sorry I'm rambling so much. PO brought home some 45-proof blackberry moonshine and I'm not really used to drinkin anyway and this stuff tastes like koolaid. OK, jerky is done now, gotta take it off, so okay bye!

She is getting very good at doing the jerky. My problem is, it don't last long enough. funny thing, I have the same problem with my alcohol storage.

Someone steals my jerky every time I make it, and my alcohol keeps evaporating, or they all have a hole in the bottom! :needbeer:
