It used to be that a pocket knife was an essential item that a man carried with him. You had your wallet, your keys, and your trusty pocket knife.
The History of the Pocket Knife
1st Century Romans created the first folding pocket knife. They made for easy carrying for soldiers and other explorers on their journeys and conquests. However, as the use of sheathed knives became more popular, the use of pocket knives fell somewhat into disfavor.
By the late 16th Century, pocket knives began to regain popularity. They were especially popular in the American colonies. From farmers to lawyers, men from all walks of life started to carry them. The ultimate portable tool, the pocket knife was a useful aid in various tasks,

I have carried a knife since I earned my Totin' chip in the scouts. I feel totally naked without one. If I get a chance to use a pc in the next few days I will post pics of my extensive knife collection.

I carry one of two different SOG Twitch pocket knives
Usually it is a Twitch II
or sometimes when I am going to wrong side of the tracks, I carry my Twitch XL
As for torches -- I always have one in my truck and my motorcycle. Plus one in my EDC bag. But for some reason, I hardly ever carry one on my belt, or in my pocket.
However, if the time ever comes, I have one on my battle belt.

The suburb we live in has become a Yuppie hell populated with soccer moms and nutless beta-males. But every spring they have a city-wide garage sale. A year or two ago right after Longrider's granddaughter was born, she came by our place so she and Mrs Inor could go garage saleing looking for stuff for the grand. They went to one sale and the lady had a brand new car seat or something that was still unopened in the box. Longrider asked if they could take it out of the box and see it. Suzi-soccer mom said "Sure, let me go get a scissor". Before she could turn around, both Longrider and Mrs Inor flipped out their lock blades and went to work on the box! I am pretty sure Suzi-soccer mom had never seen one prepper chick, let alone two! :biglaugh:

I was able to get a knife from a guy who worked in a saw mill. he used broken saw mill blade and made them into knives. I believe if my memory serves me right, the name of his business was Eight Dollar Mountain Foundry. I got the knife for $100. it came with a leather sheath and my name was on the handguard. it is a good custom made knife, I got it sometime in mid 90's.

Have carried at least one pocket flashlight for going on 20 years. Today it's a walmart special that uses two AA batteries. Sits right in the back pocket next to my wallet.
Have two Uncle Henry pocket knives - one blue steel that's razor Sharp. Along with a small hand gun spare ammo, a hand cuff key and fountain pen - yeah I'm old school:dirtyoldman:

For flashlights I carry a streamlight micro stream (single AAA) at work.
On my off days I carry a streamlight stylus pro. (2 AAA)
Both are great quality, built tough, easy on batteries and just the right amount of light for utility purposes. They also carry very well with their pocket clips. The microstream clip enables it to be used as a head lamp if you're wearing a ball cap.

Try a Gerber Cortex Flashlight uses either Double AA's or the CR123A batteries I replaced the surefire I lost on my last deployment with it, but I do have a bunch of good LED ones from wal mart which use AA or AAA batteries and my 20 year old trusty mini mag lite still.

Clip on pockets knives and folders are another whole catagory compared to the old "pocket knife." I've got some nice folders as well. I've got an old Olsen with stag grips I'll pull out later.
My favorite folder to carry right now is a clip on pocket spring assist that the RubberDuck got me. The blade pops open lickity split!

I have that same multi tool Hawg, carry it every day on my belt. My sheath gave out long ago so I had to build one for it. It's been a great tool and I've had mine 20+ years. I also have a newer version that I bought for my father, same deployment method for the pliers but there's a lock built in for the other tools. Pretty handy but it makes the tool a bit too big for my liking, that one stays in my leatherworking tool box. Those Gerber tools were damn near perfect, I keep looking for used ones in good shape to have a spare in case something happens to mine.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160430/d0da45d576fd45086b3fdb5402635893.jpg
Edit: that turned out weird, how did the quote get cut in 2? BTW the brown pouch was made for me by Infidel.
I keep a cheap set in with my Gerber multi-tool.
Infidel does very nice work!
Thanks for the plug and the compliment. It would be pretty easy to work a lock pick set into that design I think, might be worth a look if you decide to upgrade, maybe hang a small single AAA flashlight on the opposite side from the fire starter too. That might be pretty cool.

I have always carried pocket knives. Cheap Chinese ones for work at the warehouse, good ones for "civilian" duties. Case, American made Schrades, and old carbon steel ones that were made in places like Providence, Rhode Island.
I always wear a belt knife too. Either a Schrade Uncle Henry Bear Paw, or a Buck 110. Or a fixed blade sheath knife, 4" or 5" blade. I have a variety.
I have recently bought a few of the off-shore Schrades and the build quality and the steel is excellent.
Another good off shore knife brand is Kissing Crane. They are an old name, and even off shore they are still hand made.
I'm a knife-a-holic, and my name's Rice.
I have ordered enough from Kennesaw Cutlery and Smoky Mountain Knife Works that I get monthly catalogs in the mail, and daily emails from Kennesaw.
I've got to learn how to post pictures.
And speaking of ladies, mine carries a Leatherman, a good size liner lock, and an Imperial (Ireland) pocket knife. She will not carry her 38 Special because sshe refuses to submit to the state concealed weapon license.

Glad to hear the off shore Schrade quality is still good. I won't own one, if it doesn't say USA on it it isn't a Schrade as far as I'm concerned. The Imperial buyout not only killed Schrade but killed the town around the factory. Ellenville, NY is now a wasteland, a victim of NY's unfriendly business climate and out sourcing of labor. What was once a proud town in upstate NY and was home to Channel Master, VAW, Schrade is now a welfare town with no manufacturing jobs and no future. The only work left in that area is in the area's state prisons, the residents of Ellenville are now either State Correction Officers or inmate families. Sorry it's a touchy subject for me as I personally know people that were thrown out of work after the Imperial buyout. [/RANT OFF]

Why did Shrade leave? Was the company a victim of ridiculous EPA regulations? Maybe an organized labor force? Just curious.

Was Schrade a union work force? Unions and state taxes have killed a lot of jobs in this country - like the firearms industry in Connecticut. The only reason Colt is still there is Obama threatened their federal contracts if the left for a non-union low tax state. Like South Carolina.

I don't believe Schrade was a union company but I would have to ask. I can tell you the people that I know that worked there were happy and well paid. As for why they left I'm certain that it was a corporate decision and more about the bottom line than anything else. The knives could be produced for less money off shore than they could be in this country. The factory has sat dormant since Schrade left and is being torn down now as it has become an eyesore and the property will never sell with the factory in such disrepair. I could understand Imperial moving Schrade out of NY due to NY's unfriendly business atmosphere (IBM moved most of their operations out for this very reason I believe), but moving the entire production line out of the country is a whole other ball game. I believe most Schrade knives now are made in China.

Just a little research but this is what I found on wiki "In July 2004, the year the company celebrated its 100th anniversary, the factory in Ellenville was closed. The Schrade name was purchased by Taylor Brands LLC, who continue to manufacture products under the Schrade brand as well as Old Timer, Uncle Henry, Imperial & Smith & Wesson knives."
So I went to the Taylor Brands website : http://taylorbrandsllc.com/

While my recent purchases of an Uncle Henry Bear Paw (LB7) and an Old Timer Barlow do not have China on the blade, the boxes indicate that is where they were made.
Winchester lever rifles are now made in Japan, as are some Browning rifles.
Toyota vehicles, even those made in the US, are still sending the profits to Japan.
Globalization, my friend.
The difference in quality between Schrade, Kissing Crane, and those generic "China" knives is clearly evident.

I don't fault anyone for buying the Chinese Schrades, I understand the lower price point is appealing and if the quality is good the value is even better. It's a personal choice for me because of what was done to the company and the surrounding town. I don't condemn Chinese knives in general, in fact there's a couple of them in my safe, some of good quality some of poor quality. It's disheartening to see what happened to that company which once produced such great knives as the Golden Spike, LB7 and the sharp finger.
I had forgotten about the fact that they closed the factory the same year as the 100th anniversary of the company. I'm sure that point was not lost on the employees of the factory.

It's sad but true. We used to be a manufacturing society. Now they say we are a customer service society. Very little is made here anymore. Ya gotta give Sam Walton one thing, he was proud of supporting merchandise that said Made in America.
Funny but I remember when you saw Made in Japan you knew it was going to be very low quality. Now it's top of the line.
China seems to be attracting all of our manufacturing business. I figure the reason for that is taxation. I will admit I know little about trade agreements other than we seem to be getting the shaft.
China seems to also have a say in how thing are done. It seems that the Apple CEO is being called on the carpet by Beijing.

I have, in American Schrades, an LB7 old enough to have a serial number, a Golden Spike, an Uncle Henry Bear Paw LB8, and an Uncle Henry Trapper 885UH.
I do carry these, but to be honest, when doing farm work I'd much rather be using Chinese, because if I damage one it can be replaced. Unlike the classics.
I also have Buck 110 and 119, and a couple Case knives.
And a few old American made carbon steel pocket knives. And many inexpensive off shore blades. For pure junk, I also have a tiny lock back made in Pakistan.
Some of my knives are beautiful carry pieces, others are simply farm tools.

I can totally understand that, the USA Schrades are disappearing (especially those in good shape), they are also becoming increasingly expensive. I'd hate to destroy either of the LB7s my father bought back in the 80's so they only get used for hunting. Generally for heavy duty tasks I go to a homemade Bowie style knife because #1 it's a heavy duty blade unlikely to get broken and #2 if I do break it I fire up the forge and make another. Truth be told most of my knives stay in the safe and up until recently a sub $50 knife was my every day knife. That changed when I bought my Benchmade 943, it goes everywhere with me (except work where I'm constrained to a 2" blade). As good as that Benchmade is I wouldn't use it for heavy duty tasks, that's where a fixed blade comes in handy. These days you have to be very careful in your knife research, Buck and Boker both sell knives made in China. I'm sure they are not the only companies doing it either, I know the once great Puma is now selling knives not made in Germany also (don't remember if those were Chinese or not). Do your homework before putting down your cash.

I bought a Buck fixed blade at K-Mart 10 or more years ago, and was dismayed when I got home and looked closely. Yep - Taiwan. Oh, well, at least that's free China.
Living in a rural/small town area I usually wear a fixed blade on my belt when I go into town. My K-Bar USMC fighting knife is kinda big and I'm not really into scaring people.
So I generally wear hunting-type knives in the 4" to 5" blade range. Believe it or not, Kissing Crane makes some quality fixed blades this size in the $40 - $50 price range. Excellent steel and quality fit/finish. I use their "sod buster" and "farmer" type pocket knives, too.
Now that I'm retired, I'm going to start cruising the yard sales looking for old carbon steel knives. Pocket, hunting, kitchen.

In the 80s and early 90s a veritable legion of American cutlery companies died out. They were making traditional patterns when Spyderco and Benchmade and KAI USA were booming. Their two handed knives with the same old same old steels weren’t selling well. Sure, Case, with its perpetual fan base, and Queen were surviving, but many companies died or more accurately were zombified remains of what they once were. Schrade, United Cutlery, and many others, facing extinction, sold their intellectual property and their name to an overseas company and shut down their American plants. These knives, into the future, would be made overseas.
This wiped a lot of the old guard, centered around upstate New York and Pennsylvania, specificially Titusville. There were a lot of companies gone,

But first, I'd have to go get me a good Mumbly Peg knife. They have to be almost made for it, in balance, etc.
Speaking of which -- this is an art I need to teach my 11 yr old grandson. My DIL will ban me from the house for sure.Yes we played as kids and young adults. Im sure they would call protective services on a parent for teaching there kids that game today though...

I wanted the Farmer for a long time as an addition to my bushcraft kit. Should be a real winner in that category. Made in Switzerland.
I've heard lots of good stuff about Opinel. The design is from the late 1800's and it locks open/closed with a twist of the collar. Scary sharp outta the box. Nice wooden handle. And inexpensive. The stainless is $15 on amazon. They make a carbon steel version for $13. Made in Inor's favorite country: France. Very impressed.

So a little over 4 months later and I've fallen in love with the Victorinox in the above post. I used to Edc a Spyderco PM2. And that is one hell of a great knife... But this vic is just so much more useful that I've been carrying it everyday for the last few months. It's absolutely perfect for me. Kinda crazy that it won out over a knife that costs 2-3 times as much huh? The PM2 has now become a self defense blade that I only carry when traveling in crappy areas. Here's an updated pic of the vic:

I have 2 knives on me, a Frost and a Gerber; and both of them have locking blades, that are 3" long. I started carrying 2, just on general principle.

I always have a Buck folder in my pocket, and usually a Leatherman in a hip pouch

When I am home, I ALWAYS carry a Benchmade Osborne. When traveling, I ALWAYS carry a Kershaw Leek. The only time I am without a knife on my person is when I am going through airports.

I have a Gerber on me every day with serrations... which will make you bleed like a stuck pig. It's what you will feel if you manage to knock my Glock 27 loose.
