Decided to build me a new Captain's chair for out by the fire pit. Was going to paint it but I'm liking the natural look so I think I'm just going to seal it and call it done.

Glad I'm not the only one who builds a chair now and then

Looks good my friend . . .

May God bless,
Dwight

The store bought ones are so cheap. This bad boy could take the weight of Whoopie Goldberg. It also has an ejector button built in should that ever happen.

If whoopie godberg (or any other view residents) sat in MY chair . . .

I'd find a long handled metal hook . . .

I'd drag it off the porch . . . and into the yard . . .

And I'd unceremonially BURN IT . . .

The lawn would redo itself . . . and I'd rebuild . . .

Then I'd scrub my porch with pure bleach and white vinegar . . .

But I would have eradicated the cooties from my porch.

May God bless,
Dwight

Nice work.

For outside stuff you can't beat real marine Spar Varnish, not the thick urethane crap. It brushes on thin, and do several coats, looks great. A quart will do a lot. Great on other stuff too. Used it when I redid the gunwhales, thwarts, and seats on my canoe.

These are some knives I used spar on.

That thing evolved into a full OVER grown Cape Buffalo. Years ago she looked almost human and less than 200 kilograms (440 lbs).

Damm!!! that is a BIG forker. For a while I worked in a lumber mill and our big loader would get tipsey/front heavy, with real big logs or oversize lumber packs.

Nice work on the chair!

For outdoor finish here, I have found this stuff works pretty well:

https://www.amazon.com/MESSMERs-MC-500-1-Gallon-Natural-Finish/dp/B009YZOC6A/ref=sr_1_4_mod_primary_new?crid=F9TIZPW3RAQK&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.p5tHPNJ8xqQNRIdPClVggILFQCIQAP-njImrxKPcnumeenK6QG6_xRvlx9mJ0mBzc5CiIPM0yL2J5jJJl Z-HSZF0GfjrUgfvHu8BzmiOSUnU5y1zGoxtIR2QdaYyBmsKs2PfD JZLyGu5gQwQSBKN5serhvXdK8oy_TZmer9B9mRODX7YrISVelA aVWaSD_3SS0h-ksjyt2DSPa7AFqXN5qyKu0Hbcr-K4TF0iVOb4CmUV5fDd9D4QtdRZptphkjGhZQpkahg4A4WWzbyc XHnYzPUlNCvjFM6EL6qHpOciic.LNQHPct-7-VUnc5vYxCE_wB3Ob0uwYUY3iA4FR8cMG8&dib_tag=se&keywords=MESSMER%E2%80%99s+MC-500-5+UV+Wood+Finish&qid=1719275225&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=messmer+s+mc-500-5+uv+wood+finish%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-4

It is a bit on the pricey side, but does seem to do a pretty good job protecting from the sun. (At least here, the sun is far more damaging than water).

The only thing I did a bit different than the instructions call for is to thin it out about 2:1 (2 parts finish to 1 part mineral spirits). Then I applied it with a rag instead of a brush. Wait a full 2 days for it to dry. Then do at least one more coat (preferably 2 or even 3) at full strength, drying 24 hours between coats. The full strength coats, you can use a brush.

Au contraire mon frère! I had that very idea. But you see, it was about 102 degrees in my workshop so ideas had to be scaled back. I was thinking about buying some of those beverage inserts, like you'd see on a Vegas gaming table. That'll be as simple as cutting a hole and dropping them in.
