View Full Version : Day 4 No Hot Water

On New Years Eve, the water never heated back up after the morning shower, I found out Wednesday.

I spent the first day and a half sorting can goods in the way of removing the tank , 8 boxes worth.

It took 1 1/2 days to even find a LPG hot water tank that would fit the plumbing,

I get it home, and the supply lines are 90's era 1/2" PVC, so that needs replacing as does the unions and shut off valve.

Guy at the store sold me a Nat Gas shut off valve as opposed to a water one.

More spare parts for the Nat Gas transition I guess.

Heading to the store for PEX, shut off valve , PEX to pipe adaptors and elbows.
I found 3 cans of coffee under plastic grocery bags in the closet this morning that I never knew was there, on top of the PVC .:banghead:

After the tank install, all the stuff has to go back, another half day or so.

Finding lots of close to best buy date and after, so we and the dogs have a box of food to eat this month.

Time to warm up some water on the stove for a eye wash....

2 words of advice. Pex and sharkbite. Pex pipe is wonderful stuff and easy to work with. Also, sharkbite fittings ditto. Now the gas pipe and fittings are a different story. But i can hook up the water fittings to a hot water heater in a jiffy with the above materials.

Pex is the greatest invention since plumbing, itself, was invented!

YES!

Also BucketBack;

Don't be embarrassed to hire a plumber if it will get it done right and quickly! No shame in that!!!

Pex is wonderful stuff. Easy to work with and handles the freezing temperatures much better than PVC. It is used a lot around these parts.

Y'all can pex and sharkbite all you want.

I like copper . . . solder . . . and I'm good at it.

You will get done . . . be on your third coffee / coke / martini / beer . . . and I'll be finally picking up my tools.

BUT . . . I trust my copper . . .

It's tons cheaper . . .

May God bless,
Dwight

I do agree with this... Im a copper guy as well. Sharkbite connectors use O-rings, rubber, carboxylated nitrile, viton, or the sorts. I don't see it going 20+ years without leaking. And ditto on expensive!

Pex, I don't trust quite yet, as I'm still old school.

I've soldered 3/16" copper line into 3/4" copper pipe for cooling manifolds for vacuum form tooling so copper is cake work, but I went with Pex, and SharkBites

The hard part is moving the 100 lbs of stuff around in a 50 lb box.

I don't want to burn " Mom's Trailer" down, with dripping solder though..

The main problem with copper and solder in old plumbing is leaking valves. If you have one drop of water, your solder join is going to fail. And old globe type shut off valves are very often leaky. I’ve installed pex and sharkbite in leaking piping no problem. As for how long is it gonna last? I’m 73! It don’t have to last all that long! LOL

I froze a water line two winters ago. Replaced the copper with copper. I have ball valve shutoffs now and new pipe/fittings.

The new lead free valves/fittings are much more of a PITA to solder, I need to be on the lookout at tag sales and auctions for NOS valves/fittings. I do have a few BIG rolls of real solder, that works better too.

Lead? If I need drinking water and have not run the water/been home, I take a piss then flush the toilet first to rinse the pipes.

My other place has a woodstove and I keep a 6-gal pot of water on it. Use that for dishes and cleaning, saves fuel oil. Have done "navy shower " with it too. Bring the big pot into the tub and bring a smaller pot to rinse with. Get wet, lather up, then rinse off.

Plastic pipe has it's place, but if it's going in a wall it's copper.

It went thru 8 " of wall, maybe 1" of solid wall in 4 separate pieces, metal, paneling, 3/8" ply from the boathouse I tore down in '78 , more paneling, now sheet metal also.,and 7" insulation.

Now I'm back to where a normal tank installation can start, I just forgot LPG thread tape or dope.

Now I'm cooking for the dogs, doing a med check, cooking for us.

Then around noon I can go outside to get the tank and tape, like most other days

Last year, 2023, I did over all of the 1/2" in this place with PEX-B.

I also used brass ball valves where needed, all elbows were done with brass.

I have done plenty of soldered copper in my lifetime, and are good at it.

I did all the shop plumbing myself with copper and stainless steel.

I bought an electric crimper for the PEX, worked in places where the hand tool would not work.

Me, personally, need not worry about replacement at 83 years of age.

This place is 70 years old, it needed to be done over, had cheap workmanship and material.

The Victorian I owned before, made in 1890, got a do over by me in 1969.

The place was done in threaded brass pipe and lead drains on everything.

What a BITCH it was doing the three floors.

I'm still putting food back on the porch, the electric crimper has a light which makes it easy to see in dark corners.

The brass shutoff valve and the brass plex adaptor still drips a drop every now and then. ???.

I had to put a new floor under the new tank before the final fitting, now I have to move the dryer and put the other piece of 1/2" under it to match..

The floor was put down in '76-78 ? with reclaimed wood from the boathouse that I tore down....

Well, I was singing this song shoveling the shingles off the roof anyway..

Bucket, thanks for the update.

Better fix that leak before you start putting things back in place, or you'll be doing the floor again. Never worked with plex so can't give advice on that.

Two weeks now, you must be getting ripe. Put a big pot of water on the stove, when it's hot, go take a "navy shower".....then have a beer, or two, you'll feel better

We both have gym memberships, an hour and a half walk away.

The drip went away, as the drip pan is empty, but will remain in place.

I don't use shampoo at the gym, just water to rinse my hair. So a week without shampoo and my dry scalp and dandruff went mostly away. I guess that " Pantene" shampoo she likes is not for me.

I put a blue flame porch heater in on Thursday for $200, yesterday The new furnace was put in for $4950, $800 hot water tank last month.

We only paid $2195 for the place in 1971 :redneck:

The canal home with boathouse was $15.9 K, both paid for by the escape DeToilet $$$ in '68

HVAC people and plumbers are worse than the fucking mafia.

Electricians are a close third (no offense sparky prep)
The electrician charged me 1650.00 to replace the weather head and conduit to the meter last month when a tree fell across the power line to the house.
1650.00 for a ten foot galvanized schedule 40 pipe and 15 feet of wire.
Fucking highway robbery
