View Full Version : By far, the most important survival tool.

Nothing else matters if your health is not up to par. What do y'all do to stay in shape? Do you take prescription medication, and if so, what are you doing to free yourself from it?

I run a lot, but through the winter it tapers off to 2-3 days a week. Just enough to maintain a base level of fitness. I'm also coming back from an injury that kept me out for a couple months.

Anyway, I'm ramping up the miles and increasing my pace. (I hope to crack 1:30 in my fall half marathon).
I don't eat a lot of meat, especially chicken and pork. They just don't sit well with me.
I love some good booze, but limit it to 2 days a week.
I don't take any medications.
I try to get to bed early and get plenty of rest.
Regular physicals help to keep any surprises from cropping up. I was diagnosed with hypo-thyroidism a few years back and the doctor said I'd be on prescription medications the rest of my life. 3 months later I didn't need them any longer, just through a dietary change.

So, how are y'all keeping your most important survival tool sharp?

I do many repetitions of 12 oz curls followed by cleanser of whiskey and water. I do watch what I eat as I love the looks of a big fat juicy steak I watch it carefully as it cooks over a bed of coals. Eggs and bacon or sausage on the weekends.

I'm sorry I cant follow or get into the vegan health nut lifestyle. I'm going to clog my arteries and trash my liver.... but die a very happy man. Now pass the beef please.

Also I tend to stay away from doctors all they want to do is turn you into a freakin pin cushion and sell you a bunch of pills.

I'm living large fat and happy. But it doesn't mean you should.

Eating right and doing outdoor activities. I kayak a good bit and hike when I can. I plan on exercising a lot more once I finish school.

I'm not a vegan, I just pay attention to what I eat. Any diet that requires that you take supplements to survive is bs in my opinion. There are religions that promote it, but religion is equally bs..so.....

I was vegetarian for about 3 months but couldn't live without sashimi. Different strokes I guess, but I don't see the point in survival preparedness if you chronically abuse your body.

I simply get more enjoyment out of life when I'm in good shape, eating and sleeping well. If you want to avoid being put on a bunch of medication, a good lifestyle is better that just not going it to get the bad news.

I truly think that the effects of most forms of mild depression, and illness can be truncated with exercise. When you start being more active, you also start craving better food and the cycle continues. There isn't a lot of $$$ in just promoting eating good food and getting exercise though.

Gun owners historically(probably more so in the south) has a track record of being fat. The reason is probably due to the fact that you sit and shoot. There isn't much physical involvement(unless you 3 gun). "prepping" is almost like a easy fat person hobby. You can pile up a bunch of stuff, and feel good about yourself.

I exercise daily. I run for 30 mins a day. I have a treadmill. 2 years ago I got into a accident. Broke my elbow and orbital on my left eye. Had to have a few surgeries. Before that accident I was 6ft 6 240 pounds of lean muscle. I "on doctors orders" wasn't allowed to lift over 10 pounds with my right are for more than 6 months. Needless to say I had to stop hitting the gym. During that time I started my own company. That took up a lot of my "workout time".. my excuse. For the last 3 weeks I've been hitting it again everyday. Today I am 260 pounds.

It's totally true that move exercise makes you want to eat more. Will also get you to quit smoking. I started eating like shit when I was injured. Still I've never had a hung for before. Like sweets. I'm getting married August 1st. I am working my ass off to get back to 240 and stay there.

The CDC, FBI, CNN, NBC, ATF, CBS, BBC, LOL, and the BBW.

Just to name a few.

Plenty of folks take bp meds, etc. If you don't feel comfortable sharing then don't. It does seem that your levels of paranoia are a bit unfounded.

It was an innocent question, and not one that was meant to mine your medical history data. I thought that was pretty evident.

I look at life and survival this way. I survived the Vietcong and I've survived Cancer. I've also survived 2 gun battles as a Law enforcement officer. I eat what I want and drink what I want and seem to be doing just fine!

But then I'm just a Pansy a** Texan. (Couldn't resist putting that in there)

When the weather allows, I take my German Shepherd and walk about 2 miles. I usually only eat about one meal a day, mid-day.
I am on a non-narcotic medicine to calm my nerves...or I would be a Bitch to live with.
I use Melatonin to help me sleep.
I drink 3 glasses of wine each night.
I smoke about a pack of cigarettes a day.
Still want to be my buddy? If so check (yes) or (no). :bounce:

When I travel, about 40 weeks per year, I eat like shit. But I figure that builds up my body's tolerance to heavy metals and other chemicals. When I am home, Mrs Inor makes sure that I eat very well. I do not really have time to keep a regular work out schedule, but I sometimes do some push ups or sit ups in the hotel room if I am bored. I do not run as I do not have enough OEM parts left in my knees to do so. But like Wheels, I have been through a few short-term SHTF situations and my body has always been able to do what I have called on it to do.

I do not go to the doctor unless something is sticking out that shouldn't be and Mrs Inor cannot fix it herself. I rarely even take OTC medicines. (I have a bottle of 25 Advils that I carry in my briefcase that is over a year old and is less than half used.)

I love a good cigar and smoke them as often as I can. I only drink good quality beer.

I am on a non-narcotic medicine to calm my nerves...or I would be a Bitch to live with.

I smoke about a pack of cigarettes a day.
Still want to be my buddy? If so check (yes) or (no). :bounce:

I will check Yes....as long as JL does not get mad at us both. :stirpot:

I enjoy a beer from time to time not as much as I used to because I am always packing Heat.
I take meds, thanks to a blown out back from the army and PTSD that does not like letting me sleep.

I go to the Dr's...from time to time but usually hate it ask JL, I love Steak, and any other meat I can get, the meat eats the greens I eat the meat therefore I ate the greens.

am I in shape? if round is a shape.......I get out and walk my dog, when I am not swamped in school I bird hunt , lots of exercise there.....I enjoy a cigar when I golf, I suck at it but enjoy just getting out. I can keep up a mean pace when hiking or walking even over uneven ground and can do it while wearing a full combat load, have proven it over multiple deployments to the Desert Health Spa. When I run my back sounds like bone grinding on bone so I avoid it.

I will die happy and as healthy as I can, and I do not see it happening anytime soon.....and I will survive any breakdown until a bullet stops me...but perfect health will not stop that either.
