Making a fire by friction is no easy task, but Sigma 3 Survival School has a method to cheat the hand drill and save your energy in the wild.

The hand drill is a good method for starting a friction fire,

That's pretty cool! I've tried and tried to get fire with the hand and bow drill and never succeeded. I'm going to try this and see how it works for me. Plus I have a cottonwood in the front yard. Thanks!

I'm convinced true "Hand Drills" only work in the dry climate of the western US. Not so much in the wet ass eastern US! I've tried it a few times and got nothing but blisters. Good tip Hawg!

Good tip Hawg!Yeah humidity sucks. I think that survival school is in Georgia somewhere though. That guy from the survival school site has really got his act together. I really liked his shelter series.

Edited: Nope not Georgia. Right here- Huntington, AR

Pretty neat idea. Have to try it this weekend. It amazes me that a little bit of thought and a little bit of practice can make that job so much easier. I always dreaded making fire that way because it used up so much time and energy.
