This is a tutorial on how to build a Willow dugout canoe using primitive building skills. Not only are these canoes interesting to learn about, since they have a rich history, but they’re actually pretty simple to make. And, this isn’t a project that you finish and then sit back and look at. Making this canoe will give you hours of fun for years to come.

Cut away, with a saw, ax and adze, the bulk of your unwanted material. Start by creating a flat bottom. We made saw cuts perpendicular to the length of the log about every 6" and then used an ax to split out the sections.


Hilarious! That is the same technique I use when building furniture. Buy a bunch of wood; then cut away anything that is not furniture. :biglaugh:

I didn't read the whole thing but, from the picture, that looks like the heaviest canoe ever. I'm sure it floats fine, but I wouldn't want to have to drag it in and out of the water, or transport it.

Heavy duty. Id certinley prefer to run the rapids in that vs a modern aluminum canoe. Our decedent's were not pussys Im sure they would portage that canoe without complaining.
