For example, this receiver is made of little more than paper, copper coil, and a magnet. It will work as well with a crystal radio as more complex designs that may be in your stockpile. In fact,if you need to replace a speaker/receiver for a phone, CD Player, DVD player, or just about any other device, you can use these crude speakers to gain access to the sounds made by the device.
Find True North Without a Compass
These days, just about everyone uses a GPS and a smart phone with a map app to find out how to get from Point A to Point B. In fact, even if you go camping, hiking, or off the beaten path, you may use a GPS for navigational purposes. No matter how many times you read about adding a compass to your bug out bag, chances are you haven’t gotten around to buying one. Worse yet, you may have settled for a cheap compass that doesn’t even work properly.

Just have to make one correction -- on the subject of using a magnet to Find True North Without A Compass, the author erred. He is of course talking about finding MAGNETIC north. I have a comprehensive article on all this here ......... http://theoutdoortradingpost.com/showthread.php?1519-Compass-Navigating-101&highlight=Compass The part I want everyone to focus on is Page 2, and then click on the blue links which show where Magnetic north is (and how it moves) and then declination -- very important to know the difference between Magnetic North and True North depending on where in the country you live. If you are using charts to plot a course in conjunction with a compass, you MUST correct for declination otherwise you will end up many miles from your goal -- and that error will increase dramatically the further away you are from you goal.

I have another use for magnets that most of you were probably never aware of.
I am not sure about all gun laser sights, but the ones made by Viridian have what is known as ECR (enhanced combat readiness) which means the instant you draw your gun from the holster, the laser is ON. Whenever it is in the holster, it is OFF. Well it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that it is magnet controlled.
About two weeks ago, I purchased a new Logitech mouse for my computer. For some reason (I still have no idea why), it came with a small magnet that was embedded in the clear plastic package. At first, I thought it was one of those coin size batteries. Anyway, I determined that this magnet was almost the exact same size as the magnet that is sewn into my ECR holster for my wife's Sig 238. The holster is made by DeSantis.

So, in playing around with the magnet, I found out that it securely attaches to the frame right next to the laser and keeps the laser off. There might actually be times when I want to carry this small gun without a holster (like maybe in a small pouch, etc.), and using this magnet to keep the laser off and then if needed, it is a LOT quicker to activate than fumbling around for the small button on the laser itself, which actually needs a pointed object (like a pen tip) to push in.

Yes - and we all know that computers and magnets go together like Corn Flakes and motor oil. I wonder why they would include one with a mouse?

I looked it up and found this ...

And they are also correct when they say the magnetic is strong. It is without a doubt the most powerful magnet for its size that I've ever seen.

It is probably a rare earth magnet. I buy them for some of my woodworking projects. Those things are crazy expensive. Definitely keep it. You can always find a use for a good rare earth magnet.

Yeppirs -- it is SAVED. Have it attached to a shelf rail in my gun safe. Like I already said, if nothing else, I'll use it to keep the Laser off on the P238 when not carrying it in its holster.
I'll tell you what -- that little green laser on that gun is slicker than shit through a goose. Perfect for my wife.

Another use that wasn't mentioned is using magnets to verify bullion. Is that silver eagle really silver or just a good fake? The magnet will tell you.
