Born out of another conversation I thought a cigar thread would be a good place for people who enjoy a stoogie now and then to make recommendations or show off what you like.

Personally I am still on the hunt for a favorite cigar. I have a few I really like but haven't found that one I couldn't do without. I like the earthy taste with a hint of leather and some nice spice.

Rocky Patel is one of my go to brands I enjoy quite a bit. Tried a new one called Vegas a little while back and although it had a good flavor and a nice draw it left my mouth tasting NASTY the next morning.

What's your goto/favorite cigar?

Can't say I've had a Rocky I didn't like. I seem to prefer cigars with a Cameroon wrapper. CAO used to make a Cameroon that was my go to, but they stopped making them for whatever reason. I bought this Rocky Patel Cameroon a few weeks ago which may become my new go to. Tasted great and had a good draw. Good topic by the way!

This will be a good thread.

Yes can't say Ive ever smoked a bad Rocky. My favorite anybody can afford Rockey Patel is the "Edge" The Edge Sumatra is also very good. I like the Pardon 2000 as well for a not too pricey cigar.

My favorite working cigars would be Clint Eastwood approved they are called Banditoes cheroots from Cigar International they come in a bail wrapped in burlap. They are small and have a Sumatra wrapper very tasty short smokes.

I only started to smoke. and its only been cigars and tobacco pipes. only do it once a month and I kind like Tatiana Dolce Honey that my wife got me but I do cheat with the sweet/mild 1$ ones but I was told by my brother inlaw to try Maker's Mark 562 Torpedo but he said something about brown sugar or molasses I guess its better when you dip them in those I guess not sure
I need the pro's to tell me about that

Sweet and Milds Nooooooooooooooooooo Swisher Sweets Nooooooooooooooo your much better off with a Backwoods.

I myself do not care for the Makers Mark cigars. Some like them but I prefer nothing infused in my cigars. "Acid" cigars are absolutely horrible!!! OMG those things are so nasty.

Follow along in this thread Gambit and you will learn about some very tasty fairly affordable cigars and some expensive ones to. But once you smoke a real Dominican or Nicaragua cigar you will never go back to those HOT machine rolled nasty things they try to pass of as a cigar.

Squatch -- don't want to rain on your parade. I fully understand the desire for a damn good smoke. I personally can't touch the stuff (smoking in general) anymore. Damn near killed me (cigarettes) some 25 years ago. I was one of the fortunate ones -- I quit cold turkey and it honestly was the easiest thing I've ever done. 3 days of mild discomfort and I was done with that nasty habit forever.
I don't desire cigarettes .. but I can see myself liking a good cigar. However, I will never test that theory. You know the old saying .... "I am one puff away from a pack a day".

I know for many you are correct -- but back then I smoked cigars too .......... and I couldn't keep from inhaling.

I was a heavy smoker -- I was pushing 3 packs a day and had been that way for many years/

I'm stuck in ****ing Canada this weekend, so I picked up a Romeo y Juliet (Cuban). It is pretty good but in all honesty, most of the stoogies from Dominican Republic are equally as good.

Did I mention that I hate Canada? It's Friday night and I have about a 350 mile drive back to Ottawa tomorrow. I think I am going to step back outside and finish my stoogie, then drink too many beers.

Later gators!

This thread is motivating me to pick back up the Cee-Gar hobby. I stopped for no reason a few years ago. Maybe it was the vague recollection of Mrs Slippy pushing me away as I attempted an open mouth smooch...and her saying that I smelled like a Nasty Assed Smoke Filled Brewery or some such nonsense...

Anyway, I may buy me a good cigar for our summer trip to the mountains. Its just too freakin' hot to light anything up here at Slippy Lodge, freakin' summertime is here and she is pissed!

On a side note, does anyone put stock in the Cigar Aficionado Top 25 lists?

http://top25.cigaraficionado.com/Yes I used to follow that list. Its a good reference to watch and see whats what for the year. I find the ratings helpful in finding a good smoke. Low 90's to mid 90's almost always guarantee a satisfying smoke.

I need to smoke a cigar so I can post here.
A couple weekends ago I had a few cigars that were just amazing. They had an amazing bloom and I wish I could have taken a picture of them to post here. It was a beautiful thing. Unfortunately, it was a weekend "Digital Detox" retreat so no phones/cameras/computers allowed. It was at a beautiful farm B&B in southern VA so it was a great weekend. I smoked like 5 cigars while I was there. I can't remember what all they were but one was an Party Short ('02 Partagas Short) and another was a RASS ('04 Ramone Allones Specially Selected). I think there was a Cohiba in the mix as well.

As I understand it it is kinda like wine. It all depends on what regions the tobacco is grown in. Different regions (with different soils) produce different flavors.

Mrs Slippy' s mom respectfully calls them Niggras. All the respectable southern ladies did in her generation.

That is too funny ^^^^^^ Because I know it to be true. My Mom and all of our east Texas kinfolk were being polite and upstanding citizens or so they thought. Huh?

Niggra - a less controversial term for African Americans, NOT to be confused with ******. Niggra is not meant to cause offense to anyone. It's like saying "Brotha"

female ******.

****** 1: Dayum! Look at that niggra's huge ass!

Sounds like a great memory. The pipe is a whole other animal. Have never partaken myself but has a friend that smokes one when we go camping. I love the flavorful smell. Might have to try it one of these days.I smoked a pipe when I was young, good smelling pipe tobacco tastes the worst.

My cigar of choice tonight was Partagas Black Label and it is a fine cigar. Full bodied and rich with a smooth draw. I highly recommend this SOB!

Here's a link if you want to read up on it: http://www.cigarsinternational.com/cigars/11789/partagas-black-label/

NEver got into it...but always loved the smell of old man Gibsons Pipe back when I was 8... The smell and the the taste are not compatible always....

Old man Gibson..burned coal at his fire place...Mrs. Gibson gave me coffee...and they had a dog named Nigger on a 50 yard cable run out back...loved that dog....

1976.... good times.....

Careful with that pipe tobacco smell memory....Charles Nelson Reilly was a pipe smoker...he sucked on other things besides his pipe too....or so I was told.

A lot of what you're paying there is tax. Cuban cigars purchased in the right places are really no more expensive than non-cubans.

Same here. The bright side, the local Liquor Barn has a walk in humidor and a few of the 'budget cigars' which are decent. If I get my car fixed tonight I might go over.

Of course if I break my car, I might need the liquor there too, so it might be a trip either way!

Best quality "budget" cigar in my opinion is the Glorious Rocky Patel "Edge" It burns for about 40 minutes or so and is oh so tasty! They used to run 2 for 5 bucks but now they are buy one get one for about 8 dollars now at the big smoke shops like smokers outlet/wild bills. May be able to find some deals on them in mail order. Bahia makes some decent budget cigars. Ive had a few boxes of those.

I had a Por Lorranaga Petite Corona one evening last week and a Cohiba Club (cigarillo) here and there on my way to/from work over the past couple weeks.

I can't afford a humidor of the size I'd need for my cigars so I store them in coolers (coolidors!). I have Spanish Cedar inside of them and use 65% humidification beads to keep the RH right. The lids are sealed with weatherstripping to hold in the humidity.

Nothing fancy, but it works. I'll get a pic here in a little while and post it up.

Coolidors can be a good way to store the stogies for sure.

I find I really prefer my sticks at about 70 to 72 % humidity at about 70 degrees. I like to naw on the end of them so 65% is to dry for that. I've never had any issues with a tobacco bug spawn at that humidity level.
Most of the big store walk in humidors keep around 68 to 72% around here. Anything above 74% at 70 to 72 degrees one would be at risk for a bug spawn... not good for a humidor full of premium stogies.

If we are talking cheap seegars... In college, I was all over Hav-A-Tampa Jewels! At $3.75 a box, I was set! I do not think they ever bothered to wash the pesticide off the tobacco before they "rolled" it, so it had decided chemical flavor. But damn! They even had a "genuine wood tip". :biglaugh:

If you've got domestic (non-cuban) cigars you don't have to worry about tobacco beetles as it's all been pasteurized to kill any eggs.

I used to keep all my cigars at 70% but dropped it to 65% after having a few plug up while smoking outside in cold weather. I don't find them to be dry at all. My storage area rarely gets above 70 degrees so I'd be safe keeping them at 70RH. I've just found 65 to be my preference.

For cubans, though, I feel you can definitely get into beetle zone at 70% RH and temps above 70 degrees.

cut, wedge cut, or punch?

Depends on the brand for me, and how I want to smoke it. I found that with a punch, the cigar lasts longer but the taste is not as much there as with the straight cut or wedge.

Anyone try the shuriken cutter?

OK cigar newbie here, picked it up instead of drinking, I know bad choice...

Had some Rocky Patel Edge, some CAO ...Le Anniversary, bought some Trader Jacks, kinda spicy wrapper taste, but the smoke is good.

So some questions:
How far down do you smoke it?
Do you smoke it all in one sitting?
Can you save it for tomorrow, just sitting on the table outside (no rain in AZ)?
Had some,.. think it was RP that had the ring at the cut end... what's with that?

I used to smoke a pipe in pre work for a living days, some guys would cut the cigar and smoke it in a pipe, any benefit to that?

And the final question, list your favorite places to buy.

I've had real bad shipping from Cigars International, first order took over 3 weeks, now on my second order, it's been a week, there will be no third time's a charm.

This is just one man's opinion. Your milage may vary.

I smoke them down to about a 1/4 to 1/8 inch before the ring.

I ALWAYS smoke it in one sitting. Relighting a cigar tastes like shit IMAO no matter how good it was when you started.

I always try to allocate at least an hour for a good cigar. The ones I smoke (42 to 48 ring guage) usually take about a 1/2 hour to smoke, but the flavor lasts well after. Also, I never smoke them when I am really tense. I draw too quickly, they heat up and taste like shit.

The trick to enjoying a good cigar is to take it SLOW... Real SLOW... Think Arizona Time for you average service employee here.

I have not found a great place in AZ to buy them. The Total Wine store on Broadway in Tucson has a small humidor that has a few decent ones. But mostly I stop there for beer. The smoke shop on Allen Street in Tombstone has some decent ones. But because it is primarily a tourist shop, they are hyper paranoid on security and VERY expensive. When I am sifting through cigars that I might want to try, I really do not like some asshole standing over my shoulder. I have also had pretty good luck with mail order from Thompson Cigar out of FL.

1: Depends on how thrifty I'm being or how good the cigar is. Sometimes I'll smoke it down until I'm almost burning my fingers. It not like a cigarette in that there's no filter so that's all tasty tobaccie.
2: Most times I do. If I grab a bigger cigar (which I normally don't) I'll save it for the next night. Just setting out it is likely to get dried out. Maybe put it in a little ziploc baggie with a moist corner of a paper towel. You just don't want it getting too soggy or you'll just have a mess.
3: Not sure about the ring being up top. Maybe just the way that brand does it? Maybe someone else has a better answer for this one.
4: Never saw anyone smoke it from a pipe. Had a buddy that smoked a pipe but he used flavored tobacco be bought at a smoke shop. Suppose it could be done but seems like extra work for me. I like the feeling of a good stogie in my hand.
5: Buying bulk I usually go with CI. I have a lot of smoke shops near me so I can always run in and grab a couple. I know places like BevMo have a walk in humidor where you can buy so good stuff.

If you are buying in bulk from CI or anywhere else you might want to get a humidor. Personally I never bought one but I keep mine in a seal tight jar. I also keep a small water stick in with them to keep the air moist. Not sure if "water stick" is the name but it's a clear tube with a gel in it. You fill with water and put the cap on and it keeps for a month or so before you'll need to add any water.

I always remove the band who cares what your smoking no need to be a show off. Rockey Patel "edge" has band at the lighted end of the cigar just remove it.

Never had a issue with C.I. I buy my little banditos from them. always on time shipping no issues.

Smoke in one sitting if possible if not I will relight later. I will not waste a 10.00 cigar. If you don't have time to devote to a large cigar I recommend getting a bale or two of the banditos from C.I. they are a tasty treat and at most a 15 minute cigar. Clint Eastwood style cheroot.

How far down? If its a real good one I smoke it down so I need a roach clip.

Trader Jacks are good for the price!

So some questions:
How far down do you smoke it?

Until I'm bored. I have a habit of buying the sampler packs from Cigars International (yes, long shipping times) so how long I smoke them really comes down to the cigar and how it tastes. If it is something I like, I smoke it down to about 1/4 or 1/6 of its length, but if I lose track of time . . . I burn my fingers.

Do you smoke it all in one sitting?
Yup. They do not taste as good the next day.

Can you save it for tomorrow, just sitting on the table outside (no rain in AZ)?
I have put them inside an airtight container, but it is maybe good for 24hrs but some of the taste is gone.

Just a suggestion, but for anybody new to cigars, I always suggest starting with a nice Dominican cigar. I suggest maybe a Dunhill with the blue band. They are pretty light and do not have the complex flavors that a lot of others have. But I have never had a bad one either (and I have smoked boxes and boxes of them).

Personally, what I have found with the ones from Central America is they are either really good or really bad. There is no middle ground. The Caribbean cigars seem to be better average quality.

I had some of those 'Trade Jack,' aromatic cigars this weekend. I've had them before, but its been a while. They're not bad, hard to 'get started,' but they're not a bad "I'm bored," type of cigar.

Now, they do go great with this sour mash bourbon I have in my house. The cigars have a slight sweet taste (not sickly so) and it really 'pulls out,' the taste in the bourbon.

Not sure what cellophane tube. You mean the tube the gel stuff is in? If that's the case no. You fill the tube with water (there should be a fill line on the tube) and put the cap back on and drop the whole thing in with the cigars.

That is the great debate amongst cigar experts. Cello on or cello off. If you take cello off your different varietys of cigars will blend with each other over time.

Personally I Ieave cello on so my budget cigars don't blend with my quality cigars. They will pick up and retain the humidity in a humidor with cello on.

If you have a Spanish cedar lined humidor you may want to take cello off your budget cigars so they pick up some of the cedar.

I love the banditos. Tasty short smoke.

If a man didn't smoke, but wanted to keep some cigars on hand for entertaining, what should he get?

I've never had one, but I've heard Rocky Patel "Edge"

That is the great debate amongst cigar experts. Cello on or cello off. If you take cello off your different varietys of cigars will blend with each other over time.

Personally I Ieave cello on so my budget cigars don't blend with my quality cigars. They will pick up and retain the humidity in a humidor with cello on.

If you have a Spanish cedar lined humidor you may want to take cello off your budget cigars so they pick up some of the cedar.

I love the banditos. Tasty short smoke.
Yes, to cello or not to cello, the age old debate.
There is a tendency to think of cello as a plastic so naturally it seems logical to want to remove it to allow the cigars to 'breathe'. Rather than plastic, cellophane is actually made from cellulose, often from wood. While it is resistant to water it is water vapor permeable so it's fine to just leave it on.

Think of it this way: Cigar manufacturers obviously have an interest in keeping their product at optimum RH until it reaches their customer, which can be a lot of time. So, if in all their research about what is best, they decide to ship their cigars in cello it's cool to leave them in there.

The cello helps protect the wrapper and will slow moisture loss making it a little more forgiving to possibly less than optimum storage conditions in smokers homes. Also, the cigars won't be affected as much by frequent opening of your humidor or if you pull out a stick or two to take somewhere if you don't have a travel humi.

Most of the cigars I have were not cello'd when they were made so I have to be more careful with storage. I use bulk humidification beads from my friend at Heartfelt Industries and just put them in cut and tied sections of ladies nylons before I spray them with distilled water. My humidors (coolidors, actually) are lined with spanish cedar to help hold RH. I also have dedicated 2, 5 and 15 count Otterbox travel humidors if I'm taking some cigars to a party/cookout or whatever or if I'm going on a trip.

So, the best advice I've heard is to store them how you bought them.

I did an 'accidental,' experiment the other week with my humidor. I had it nearly full of a variety pack, all in the cellophane wrappers. Well I worked through those over two weeks and bought a package of Trader Jack's. The jack's were not wrapped and when I put them in the humidor the humidity stabilized right where it was supposed to be.

I'm still not 'sold,' on either option, but it was interesting to notice.

I bad mouthed Cigars International earlier in this thread, so here is the result of their slow shipping problems...

I've had real bad shipping from Cigars International, first order took over 3 weeks, now on my second order, it's been a week, there will be no third time's a charm.

I'm pleased to report that we've made significant progress with your order. Our warehouse team is currently in the process of retrieving your items from inventory. Once completed, our goal is to have your order picked, packed, and shipped out within the next couple days (or sooner). Stay tuned, we'll continue to keep you updated until your package leaves our facility.

Respectfully, John Greeby

This was the 3rd notice I had received from them on this order, here was my response:

John,
This is completely unacceptable for a first time buyer from your company. How many more weeks must I wait?
You should throw in a box of Rocky Patel cigars as a good will gesture.

So yesterday I get an email from the President of CI:

Ever thought about trying to find a peppermint flavored cigar or pipe tobacco? I'm guessing you like the candy because it produces saliva in your mouth which can get dry from smoking the tobacco. It's also a trick for hikers. Suck on candy while you hike and it keeps you from getting dry mouth.
