I use lots of wood for the fire pit an smoker an hate paying for it.
I can identity most trees by the leaves but when I pick up wood from side of road or someone brings free wood I have a hard time trying to identify it by the bark. some I can tell by smell but not always.
so here is some wood I split yesterday I think I have 2 kinds of oak as the bark is different but they smell the same the others not sure.
take a look an tell me what you think

the far left is bright yellow when split from what I read they say thats mulberry the next 2 I believe to be the oak I thin you are right on the red oak. next I would say that is a good chance of hickory compared to your pic .
the last one im not sur it has streaks of red in it when split

I was in the lumber business all my life, and I can identify many different types of common construction/finish wood. As long as it has been made into lumber and run thru the planer. :jester:
The middle one could be elm. That stuff is stringy as hell and kind of light red in color.

Damnit, unless it's Southern Yellow Pine or SPF, I'm just throwing darts blindfolded.
Looks very burnable tho.
If the wood is surrounded by wranglers, I wouldn't suggest smoking it! Haha
If that fourth one is hickory it would be really stringy and yellow. It kinda looks like a thorn tree we have around here. Second one looks kinda like a piss elm. My screen is small and my battery is low so my light is dark so I can't see it really good. Last one looks like oak. First one maybe oak and maybe poplar?
