They have found canned food still. There are a lot of varying factors though.

As much canned food that Maine-Marine has it better last forever...

For me... no canned food does not last forever. I will eat fresh worms before I eat a 30 to 50 year old canned product.

All I know is about 20 years ago Mrs Inor had a job as the warehouse manager for our local school district. They got several pallets of "free" applesauce in #10 cans from the federal government. She came home one day all upset because the cans started to literally explode. She called them "Apple bombs", which was a play on words because at the time we had a local grocery store chain called "Applebaum's".

We do go past the "best by" date, but I would not trust it indefinitely. And if the cans start swelling, they become targets immediately.

I go past best by dates onblots of stuff in fact the mountain house meals I have used 2 years past date and where perfect.
For canned goods it would depend on the food. refried beans I would think might survive a long time I guess being hungry I will be opening the can an testing.

I used to donate the cans in storage to the hopeless shelter right before the date. But I'm rethinking that strategy now. Had some canned tuna one time that tasted pretty stale. Ate the whole thing and then checked the date. 2 years past. Didn't get sick.
