So we have the 8 ft party pit but have wanted to build a nice small pit for small fire and cooking.
looked at many styles of pits and went with a Dakota inspired style.
the square pit makes for long logs for extended fires and doubles as a dual cook pit or rotisserie spit.
So this rectangular pit is about 18 to 20 inch deep the trench is where I will drop a 4 to 6 inch pipe on a angle to maintain a permanent air flow.
If I can't find a pipe tomorrow The trench will have the same effect so will be cooking on it tomorrow.
we have lots of clay in the ground so should keep shape and hold heat nicely.
more pics to follow as it it is completed.

This might just add a new dimension to deer camp cooking.

It's important not to cook on the "Party Pit"

It's important not to cook on the "Party Pit" Yes seeing as how the party pit is a toxic non cooking pit. Just a little fuel has been used as fire starter over the years Lol!

IDK, but there are warnings about eating any game around the Gladwin area.
State of Michigan Issues Health Advisories For Consuming Wild Game From Tittabawassee River Flood Plain

Today, (9/14/2004)four state agencies announced their response and concerns regarding a recent Dow Chemical Company draft report on wild game. The study evaluated dioxin levels in wild game living in the Tittabawassee River floodplain, downstream from the community of Midland.

The Michigan Departments of Agriculture, Community Health, Environmental Quality and Natural Resources said today samples of wild game taken from the floodplain show high levels of dioxin and dioxin like compounds in muscle meats, skin, and other consumable portions of animals.

So... we used the pit yet its still unfinished. The duck improvised the pipe we need to get and covered the intake trench. Once we got the fire going it drew the air from the intake trench and all smoke disappeared. This thing has potential.

Sounds awesome! We talked about this once before, but nobody had tried it that I know of.

Something like this might be worth building at camp to smoke a Billy or a Greg deer.

forgot the update pic
needs a few more rocks but it's complete and works great.
We were able to have a nice hot fire during some hefty winds that would have made a ground level pit usless an hazardous.
Once this pit heats up it draws air in the pipe and burns very efficient leaving no unburnt wood.
Before it gets hot to draw there is some smoke or when adding a large amout of new wood but for the most part very little smoke.

Yeah I'm impressed we had gail force winds the pit worked great. Pretty much no smoke made it nice to sit around.
