I am trying to get people to share ideas about different aspects of prepping. I, too, get sucked into a lot of the political BS. Unfortunately, I think it is too late to change our country as too many indoctrinated morons want economic slavery (aka socialism). Here is my next in a series of bug bag related threads. The title once again is pretty self explanatory.

I chose a Snugpak All Weather Shelter. It is a 10'x10' nylon camping tarp. The tarp comes in two colors. It is either coyote brown or olive green so it blends well with nature. It comes as a kit which includes 8 aluminum tent stakes and four ten foot pieces of paracord. I did dump the aluminum stakes, and replaced them with lighter weight titanium ones (which also serve more purposes). The entire set up weighs about 2.2 pounds. It is not the lightest shelter in the world, but it is cheap, durable, easy to set up, and packs relatively small. I purchased mine on Amazon for about $60. I also purchased an SOL Mylar backed tarp as a ground sheet for my shelter as insulation from the ground/heat reflector.

What's in your kit? Why did you chose it?

What's in your kit? Why did you chose it?

Two man backpacker tent, I also have a poncho and 550 cord.

The tent is mainly for winter, if I had to use my pack in summer the tent would be dropped.

I startetd with a tarp shelter in my pack 10× 12 gave me versatility of several shelter designs. On our first bug out practice it served well.I also have a few mylar blankets already in my bag that could be used for heat retention
I have the military modular sleep bag so heat is generally not a issue it might not be the lightest bag to carry but it can be used with no shelter set up so can be useful on the move.
So after our first run I came to the conclusion no matter what you pack it's temporary an only used either till a more permanent shelter is built or between destinations so at 3.5 lbs I have a Colman 4 person dome tent with a tub bottom. more then enough room for myself an gear or myself wife a 2 kids if need be but the wife will have same set up so there will be multiples.

I hear you on the military sleep system. I actually use that as my sleeping bag despite the heavy weight. In my neck of the woods, I might want an instant shelter to get out of -20F weather in order to warm up. If you never experienced that cold, it really does suck as it causes your lungs to feel like they burning. My BOB is also designed for more than just bugging out. I can supply myself for awhile with it if needed. I can also use it to live in the woods long enough to shoot some communist scum. The tarp is just a little extra shelter for me and my dogs who will be going with me.

That is on my list of 'to buy' items. That with a poncho and poncho liner, and you are set for just about any type of weather.

SportsMansGuide has them for just over $100 at times, right now they are hovering around $200. For anyone looking.

I use similar to this design. Out of one 10x12 tarp I have a floor and closable doors which keeps the bugs out and the rain. Its big enough to bring my pack inside. No poles need to be carried. Only one pole needs to be cut when you arrive at your chosen location. I carry light weight aluminum stakes and the guide lines are already attached set up is 15 minutes tops.

Shelter for my GHB consists of a FroggTogg heavy duty poncho. I try to keep my pack close to 35 lbs., and it is just supplied to get me home over the course of a 3 day hike.

I didn't think I was claustrophobic until I climbed in one of those.

All I have in my BOB is a tarp strapped to it. But I also don't have the problem a lot of you have. If I have to bug out in winter I'll just have to rough it in the 70 degree temperature. Brrrrrrrr.

I also keep my backpacking pack next to the BOB so if I think I need it I can grab that one and it has a small one Squatch tent and tarp.

Depending on which version of the BOB, which is simply a catchall name I use for several of my various kits that are used for a variety of scenarios, I have a Mountain Hardwear Trango 3.1 Expedition dome tent, which is good for down to -30F, a couple of el-cheapo 8x10 - 10x12 tarps, several GI ponchos, a couple of space blanket interior emergency pup tents, and though it is not really part of a BOB, but an INCH kit item, a Cabela's 10'x10' modified pyramid tent.

The two larger tents are pretty much vehicle/game cart carried items, with the others in backpacks or duffle bags.

Just my opinion.

You've got a coleman 4 person tent that only weighs 3.5 lbs? Where did you find that?

All we have is 3 mylar blankets. (and sleeping bags). We would build a shelter out of pine boughs if need be.
One thing I should put in one bag is a large piece of plastic to lay on the ground, and another for water collection.

one of them might might be a 3 person but four could lay in it I will look at that today
I bought one at Dicks Sporting Goods 2 years ago and the wife had hers prior not sure when an where Hawg got that one. Hers is the lighter one and a touch smaller that could be a 3 the newer one is a four for sure.

Its rated as a 3 person but 2 adults with gear or 2 adults with kids or teenagers or 4 real cozy adults but it would be snug . I thought it went closer to 6 or 7 lbs but not sure without looking at it.

I've got a military poncho that can be strung up into a shelter in a pinch for my ghb. Bug out I have my old north face 3 man tent from when I used to backpack. It's barely big enough for 2 people. Whoever came up with the tent capacity ratings was either a midget or drunk.

We've had bad storms the past few years here, unusually bad from what the long term residents tell me. So I plan to ruck through forty miles of snow in around -10 f degrees. I've done worse and longer, but damn it is not fun.

I'll weight it tonight Im coming up with about 8.2 lbs for the Sundome 3 man which is what I have. I also have a 2 man back pack tent that weighs under 3 lbs but you can't even sit upright in that one. Its a crawl in a lay down and put your boots on outside unless your a midget tent.

I use a tarp and paracord. A poncho too, wear the shelter and keep moving. Get off the X.....dead men stay still, keep moving.
