Wild Persimmon: Tricks and Treats From This Tasty Fruit

The American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is a deciduous tree found the eastern half of the U.S. It has alternate simple leaves and small orange fruits about 2 inches in diameter. A related species with larger fruits can be found in Japan and neighboring countries. These are the source of the tomato-sized fruits you may find in a grocery store under the name persimmon. Both the American and Asian persimmons have a small woody “cap” with four points, just above the fruit. Not too many of those left around here. One time my grandmother gave us unripe ones as a trick. They'll pucker your face up quick! We passed that trick on to our friends. Lol, good times! Haven't had any for a long time, but they are good.

I love American Persimmons. We had several trees around the mini-homestead I lived on from age 5 to 14.

Japanese persimmons just do not hold a candle to the native American ones.

And, yes, my oldest brother nailed me with one before the frost. Puckered me up something fierce.

Is it easy to identify the native trees from the Jap trees?

You're too far north for them. This is their range

Guess that explains why I haven't seen them.

Japanese persimmons tend to be fairly large with only two or three per cluster. American persimmons are smaller and often with several in a cluster.
