Bomb Cyclone: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-14100993/bomb-cyclone-map-west-coast-weather-forecast-washington-oregon-california.html

Power out from around 8:15 pm ~ 2:30 am...no issues...haven't checked the grounds yet...more due today...
Very high winds all afternoon and night. Much calmer this morning...

We're glad you made it through safe and sound! Please don't take this wrong; I'm sure the storm was not pleasant at all. But...

<rant on>

When did creative writing become part of being a weatherman?!? "Bomb cyclone"?!? Really? What happened to just calling it a "bad storm"? Today I even heard it called a "bomb-o-genesis"! It's just a really bad freakin' storm!!! Isn't that good enough?

When we were in Minnesota and a winter cold front would go through, the weatherman would call it a "Siberian Express"! Like that is supposed to mean something and make it more scary? It's freakin' Minnesota, in January! Of course it gets cold you dope! Sometimes it gets really cold, sometimes it even gets really really cold!!! That's what it is supposed to do you retard! That's why the state motto of Minnesota is: "Minnesota, come for the weather. Stay for the taxes." Dumb asses!

When the new FCC Chairman comes in, I want to suggest they make it a finable offense for weathermen to use creative language to describe weather events! And when they start coming up crap like "Bomb Cyclone" or "Atmospheric River" or Siberian Express", those need to be crimes against humanity!

Have you noticed that the time frame for being the worst/most severe, etc has shortened. used to be, worst storm in 100 years, now its, worst storm in a decade. Are they thinking people don't know a decade is only 10 years?

Are they trying to promote this bogus climate change BS?

I ordered 2 more rain barrels. I am going to daisy chain them across the back of the new shed. The shed has a metal roof on it and I added a rain gutter. All told we will 400 gallons of water on hand. We have the creek that runs through our property and the back up well with a hand pump but I just wanted more water storage on hand.

We do have a couple broody hens and have let them hatch some eggs. Letting nature take its course does work but there is a reason hens lay so many eggs over the course of their lives and the world is still not overrun with chickens... The vast majority do not make it long enough to get to laying/roostering age.

So, we finally broke down and bought a proper egg incubator today. Not knowing ANYTHING about incubators, we both did a ton of research. Incubators start at about $30 and go up to over $12,000 for the commercial ones. Obviously, we do not need a $12,000 incubator, but we also figured the $30 one might just be an effort in frustration. We finally settled on a Brinsea Ovation 28 EX.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1449ST/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=farmingfoodie-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01N1449ST&linkId=a8975f1584d19f93a09ba57b497c0fc1

I do not know a damn thing about it beyond the reviews for it seemed to be the most positive of all the major brands. So maybe it will be great; maybe it will suck canal water? But it will allow us to hatch both chickens and turkeys, which was a requirement. (We shot all the guineas two days ago because they kept attacking the chickens. So that is a positive.)

Since the turkeys do not start laying until late March, we should have time to do at least one batch of chicken eggs before trying turkeys. So that will be helpful. If any of ya'll have experience incubating bird eggs, any advice would be most appreciated. But either way, I will document here our experience trying it.

Looks like a nice incubator. They came a long way from the 300 egg Farm Master T-Dad 1066 bought new in 1949, which I still have and it still works. I assume you can turn off the auto-turn feature right? You shouldn't turn eggs after day 18 so the chick can orient themselves to the top and start breaking out.
He only raised game cocks. One nice thing about that Farm Master was the drawer system, he had taken hardware cloth and made a bunch of compartments where he could separate the eggs by breed. Alot of the cross breeds you couldn't tell the chicks apart, except the Aseels. Once the chicks hatched, then he could mark their breed by nipping their webs with scissors. That one we turned the eggs by hand, every 12 hours-ish. It keeps the chicks from sticking to the side of the egg as they develop.

Do you have a brooder?

We do have several brooders (that I made from old dog kennels). They work pretty well but I do have to keep them in my shop or they cannot keep up with the cold at night. I wouldn't want to use them for a commercial venture, but so far we are losing less than 1% of the chicks. So that is good enough for just raising them for ourselves and a few friends.

On the incubator, you can turn off the auto-turn thing after some preset amount of time. We still have to figure all that out. Everything we know about the process is coming from books. So draw from that what you will. I would greatly prefer to learn from an actual human being that is actually successful at doing it. But that, unfortunately, has not been an option so far.

It sounds like you have done this before, so would it be okay if I ping you with questions as they come up?

Absolutely. Please do.

We used to hatch about 250-400 chicks every year, sometimes 20+ different breeds or crosses. So yea, a little bit of experience here...

3 cases Ultra, 2 - 30 packs Busch Light, 2 9V batteries. I had more in my other cart when I went back in. Well the meds weren't ready so I went to check on ammo. A old timer was swinginging a 22 single shot around and I said hey hey. He pointed at me again so I said WTF. His son called me out so I said even empty guns kill people . The Walmart ass. had no control. So I walked away, only to be called out by the son, saying go away old man, you don't want no trouble with me, we were here first, he'll point the gun anyway we want, So I call management, after the ole lady and the Son calling each other out, and me and he have the staredown, He blinked, we left.

Then he followed us back there for a complaint, I just starting touching the left pocket of my Carhardt , where Elsie Pea hangs out, while my right hand was on the CW9 in my pocket

10 associates came by , 2 I know from Love INC as volunteers, and the Son is a client at the food pantry.

About a month and a half ago, our 2025 steer was dropped off. He ran around the catch pen twice then climbed the "no climb" fence and ran off into the desert.

We got him back today, along with a really ugly black buddy. The ugly black buddy is not going to stay here beyond a few weeks, just to calm the little sucker down. We normally name all of the steers we raise for beef "Moth" (short for Meat On The Hoof). But this one is going to be called The Little Red Devil. He is going to be a handful.

So, I bought one of these Crimpit thingies a few months back, and I'm using it every day for lunch or dinner. Everything from mexican, ham 'n' cheese, sausage and eggs, the variety is endless. Good for leftover meat of any kind, add some lettuce and cheese. I toss 'em on my George Foreman Grill like a panini for a couple minutes, and have hot sammiches. I paid $20 for it... I see them as high as $29.
