View Full Version : Bug Out Bag: What's in it??

Just for the heck of it, . . . let's do a little something different here.

Look at the little back pack, . . . 18 inches tall, . . . 10 inches wide, . . . 10 inches thick, . . . when full to the gills.

If this was your "Bug Out Bag", . . . what would you put in it, . . . to leave by the door, . . . to grab on the way out, . . . just in case you had say 5 minutes to get the heck out, in your vehicle, and on the road.

AND: there is one for you, . . . and another one for your significant other. What would be stored in each one, . . . again, by the door, . . . grab and go.

I'm thinking that if we take the time to think about it, . . . make a short list of say the 15 most important items you would make sure were in there.

AND: we cannot plan on coming back, . . . the "Event" is a bad one.

Think about it, . . . lets see what all we can come up with.

May God bless,
Dwight

Good thread Dwight. I know everyone has ammo food water etc.... I have three kids so I have the luxury of 5 bags. One out of the box item I have in a kids bag is I siphon hose in case the truck runs out of diesel.

Man. I wish I could make a list and say this is it. But I change stuff in my bags so often, it varies at any given time.
I tend to over think and experiment with function, where I can streamline things, etc.
Right now I've got 5 different bags sitting in my camper, packing and reorganizing while preparing for this Florida run.
I still don't know which one I'm taking. I wuvs dem all, and dey all haz dey funkshunz.

The beauty of this kind of discussion is the mentioning of something by one, . . . that the rest of us my have forgotten, . . . dismissed, . . . or overlooked.

Case in point: "One out of the box item I have in a kids bag is I siphon hose in case the truck runs out of diesel."

There will be a space somewhere for a small hose.

May God bless,
Dwight

It's really dependant on region. My pack is for East Texas, it'll probably be a lot different than one from Ohio cause we don't have near the winter yall get. I try to make sure all of my kits contain the 10 C's and build off of that.

I basically am set up for two different scenarios.

Right now, I carry in the car my GHB in case I am say in town (18 miles away) and all things electrical go down due to an EMP.
However, let's say I am sitting home here at the puter and all of a sudden a nuclear weapon takes out Washington, DC (which is about 100 miles to my north). I would plan to hit the road pdq and head west to the mountains. I have another bag packed that sits in my office closet that I would grab to combine with the other to become my two-bag BOB. As example: things like fold-out solar panel charger and extra storage battery and all the cables for USB devices, two compasses (different functional -- see my thread "Compass Navigating 101"), signal mirror, a great little pocket reference book (hand size), published by Maxpedition (that contains information on all standards in the world), a couple of small boxes of spare batteries, my 8x40 monocular, just to mention a few specialized items. These are all things that I would not need in my GHB to get 18 miles back home.

I'll have to find the bag before I can check it's contents

People need to get realistic on just exactly what "bug out" means.

You might have a bag totally prepared, but there are still dozens of tasks you'll need to perform before you actually hit the road -- assuming you'll start off in an SUV or truck of some kind.

For instance, most everyone will want to take all weapons and ammo. That will take a little while to clear out your safe. You probably have food and water rations stored somewhere that would also be going with you. I seriously doubt you carry all that stuff in your vehicle right now.
You are going to have to gather lots of different clothing, etc. Most have pets that will not be left behind. But these pets also have "stuff" you need to gather and get into the vehicle. Anyway, wouldn't surprise me if all this took a couple of hours before you actually drive away from your home.

I actually have a pack like the one in the op. They're pretty limited on space. When I use it is carry my water on the outside. The molle straps will take either a Nalgene type carrier or the GI type. I have two of each but I just slapped on one on each side to give you an idea of what they look like. In my opinion the military canteens carry better on these small packs.

Thank you! They have settled a bit. Got my truck going again after two and a half months of buses, asking for rides, and walking four blocks back and forth to the library or Starbucks to do internet. Hopefully I will have internet at home again in another month or so and can have the time to start writing once more.

So tell us how big your BOB is and how much it weighs?

The size is the pack in the OP with a 4" x 10" water bottle pouch on each side and the poncho, liner, and sleeping pad roll strapped on top. ~40 pounds. The full EDC, including clothing is ~15 pounds.

Just a note about lists, mine in particular: A fairly large number of line items (individual items) does not always mean extreme size or weight. Many items are just an ounce or two, sometimes less, and can be packed tightly together, in very little space.

Of course, when I go full bore, I use a game cart and the various kits carried on it can weigh up to 500 pounds total. I do not travel light. I live in the high desert of Nevada, and have to be ready for minus 30 F temps, high winds, and deep snow in the winter; and 100 F plus temperatures, very low humidity, with no air movement in the summer; where there is very little surface water, very little precipitation, long distances between habitations, very few wild edibles, wide changes in elevation, and more than a few predators.

Just my opinion.
