Water is absolutely critical for survival no matter what the situation. You also need to be able to purify it.
Rain catch system from any roof into barrels works. Most homes already have rain gutters so just a matter of directing it into barrels. The rain water works great for plants. I purify mine for human use after drawing it out of the barrels.

How are you going to protect all that PVC pipe in the winter? It gets brittle in cold weather and if the water freezes it will burst the pipes. I suppose you could wrap it with heat tape and then put about 6 inches of insulation around it.

I'm next to a city park with a small lake stocked with fish so that is in my plan.

We don't have city water. The house has a well. I have a generator to keep it going for awhile but I want to get a hand pump for the well. That way I'll have an option if I run out of gas or the genny goes down. There is also a small lake on the property and a few spring fed creeks.

I'd be interested in how that works. Is it just for storage?

You can see part of the 17x24 roof that feeds the top back barrel. With the vent on the top the water equalizes between all the barrels.

Thats a nice set up. HuntingHawk.
I do not have adequate water storage.
Right now I have 3, 35 gallon drums filled, 5, 2 gallon spigot jugs 10, 1 gallon jugs. And 5 cases of 36 bottle 500ml. This is all commercially bottled, the drums are municipal water.
I have 2 more drums empty, 3 bath tub bladders 4 5 gallon aqua containers, and 10 2qt canteens. Cant forget the water heater. We Always have empties in the recycling bin.
I have a ceramic 5 gallon berkley type filter. I also have the charcoal , sand and knowledge to make a filter. I live a cross the street from a major lake maybe 200 yards.
I however do not feel I have enough stored, the lake is a huge part of my plan.
