View Full Version : SPEAR and BALCS

I dug up my old plate carrier tonight while working, I wanted to get the model and size for rifle plates.

When I served we had the IIIA SPEAR/BALCS inserts, and I was wondering what everyone else thought?

The plate carriers are good, but the soft armor provides small caliber protection around more of the body. The weight is negligible, but unfortunately the price significant (in the $500 range) while rifle plates can be purchased for around $200.

I am confused. (I have never spent any time trying to figure out body armor.) Wouldn't the rifle plates be better anyway, especially if they are cheaper?

It is a layered system. The soft armor covers a larger area too, so even if a rifle round might penetrate, it may not cause as much damage. I'm thinking about getting both in the end, probably the plates first.

I brought it up more for those whom may not know about the soft armor inserts in modern body armor, and just see the plate carriers.

There is also the likelihood that the average person here in the states would face small arms over rifle rounds too.

Now I just need to find a few private security gigs here in KY so I can write off the equipment as a business expense, and I'm good!

Just mildly inebriated musings.

Got ya.

That is probably something I should look into. There are some areas down where we live now that I would really like to explore because of the old cowboy legends. One place I would really like to see is the canyon where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday killed Curly Bill. But I am told that canyon is way overrun by cartel drug runners.

Down side is they are in the expensive side. I'm looking for cheaper suppliers, but there are not many out there.

Did you put plates in a secondary carrier?

Nah. I bought the plate carrier back in 2011 when I was contracting over in Afghanistan (better than the garbage the company provided) and plates are running around $100 from AR500.

I sold off my Level III backers when I had a LBT 6094 Marshall Overrun vest since they didn't fit.
I just run plates in the TAG and BPC, and I use a 1 1/2" strip of foam to raise the 10 x 12 plates up high enough in the XL IBA OTV.
Whicjh also is heavy. Then add some M4 mags and a IFAK more weight

I can wear the slick plate carrier and then throw a tactical vest over if the need arises.
The Slick carrier conceals OK under a loose coat

Nah. I'm just looking to do some more overseas contracting again (or maybe stateside contracting) and I like my own armor better.

I never liked layering the equipment, we had a few drowning incidents. I just ran my plates inside the IBA, one of the reasons I try to buy gear which supports the SPEAR/BALCS soft armor. I could take the plats out if I did not expect any small arms fire. Realty is though, after carrying 60+lbs for years, it did not make a huge difference.

Got it

I'm too old to be going around fully armored. The wife and I were watching SIX last night, and I commented to her about how much stuff the SEALS carry on them. Criminy!

However -- in the chance (who knows how great?) that the SHTF and all hell breaks loose -- I DO have an outfitted battle belt that I will wear while roaming around the property here to kill zombies. It holds two AR mags, two pistol mags, drop-down holster rig, KaBar sheath, trauma kit, flashlight pouch, etc.

Not that bad once you get used to it. Of course I have a torn up back too, so . . .

My wife brought up a good point. I could go to a crap hole country, work for six months and take three months off. I would make more money and spend more time with my kids.

I have an FLC, but I'm moving it onto my old contractor armor.

What kind/brand of long gun would you prefer to use in a craphole country? That is if you don't have to use what the natives use.
I Want to hear what a contractor would use versus what the keyboard commando's ( like me maybe) use

The deer of course

Once I confirm the 10 x 12 plates cover the vitals, I'll sew a few bar tacks into the plate pocket to hold them up

I like the IBA for a budget armor for woods use, it's not like the Miltia is training in my backyard anymore. Although my MDNR LEO neighbor thinks so

My last contract gig was boring, no weapons except the M9.

My two cents (not on the contractor side), if SHTF it's possible that soft Level IIIA might prove to be more useful than steel plates for bumping around day to day. Some unscrupulous folks with an eye to take your stuff may approach as a friendly but have a concealed handgun.
I still plan on getting some plates (I've been looking hard at a Spartan plate and carrier combo - $200 with side plates and free shipping) but soft armor would be more comfortable for every day wear.

Yeah, that is why I bought a carrier that supports SPEAR/BALCS but will probably buy the 10x12 plates first. One nice thing about my carrier though is that it came with a soft insert which has similar rigidity to the SPEAR/BALCS inserts . . . it helps the old, damaged back some!
