If his son is in a tough situation he doesn’t want to be in, he simply texts one of his parents the letter “X” and upon receiving it, his mom or dad calls him and tells him they need him to come home ASAP. It allows the kid to bail with a bulletproof excuse – his parents are lame! – without raising an eyebrow. Because if there’s anything more universal to teenagers than peer pressure, it’s uncool parents.

Interesting plan, and I'm sure it could be adapted to other situations outside of just "Peer Pressure"

My wife reads that site sometimes and I was actually considering this option with my 3 sons,
My parents were artists and musicians so I was always able to discuss alcohol and drugs with them pretty openly as a teen.
-on the other hand my wife and I are a bit more straight laced and we didn't bring our boys up in a hippie commune ( like I was raised)
Our oldest is about to turn 13, has a girlfriend and a cellphone and situations like described in the article are rapidly approaching.
We plan on talking to him about plan x this Friday before the weekend and I will hopefully assure him that it will be a " no questions asked deal"
Basically -
He sends a text
I call and tell him he needs to come home.
And if he doesn't want to talk then I simply won't ask.

There was a time with a bottle of 151 I probably should have done this with when I was 15.
- still remember that first time waking up on the bathroom floor!
