WHAT FEATURES ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A PORTABLE WATER FILTER
A portable water filter is a must have if there is any doubt about the quality of the water source. This could be hiking, backpacking or a camping trip.
With so many portable water filter options on the market, narrowing it down to just one can be a daunting task. Do you need a filter or a purifier? What about a lifestraw or water bottle filter? How much should you spend on a filter?
Let’s discuss a few of those topics. Hopefully, this will help narrow down your choices.
Filter Or Purifier
One of the main questions I hear, “What is the difference between a purifier and a filter?”

That's him, Kevin Felts. I skip his articles at that site myself.
Here's another article. I like the Renovo over the Lifestraw because it has an activated carbon filter. The activated carbon helps to remove harmful chemicals, heavy metals, radioactive particles, and some viruses.

It lists him as the owner of survivalist boards, right under his byline. Ha!

What kind of Sawyer filter did you get? I use the Sawyer Mini as a first stage. I bought a Platypus Carbon Element for mine (lightweight and about $20). The Platypus Carbo Element comes with a small piece of plastic hose which fits onto the Sawyer Mini. So, no other pieces are needed to connect the two filters. The Platypus filter helps remove chemical contamination. I also just purchased a Katadyne Carbon Filter. The Katadyne filter is supposed to one apart, and the user can replace the charcoal. If the Katadyne filter works just as well as the Platypus model, I will carry Katadyne in my pack as I will be able to refill it with blackened ash from fires. Reduction of chemical contamination is something a lot of people overlook.

I'll have to check that out. I plan on using mine when i'm bowhunting elk up in the mountains, to reduce my carry weight.

The thread below is what I currently carry in my BOB. I also use two 1.1 Quart Stanley Stainless Steel Canteens. Both soda bottles are 16 ounces. I also have Aquamira water purification tablets. I do not know where or how far you will be hiking when you hunt, but you could possibly scale your water way down and carry a second Sawyer Mini.
