View Full Version : Rabbit questions NEED ADVISE??

Hey guys, the wife wanted a bunny, for years. I have built her an elaborate bunny coop under my "used to be lean too", which is now a fully enclosed room off my storage shed with sliding windows and siding....
Questions. I built the first rabbit hutch (overbuilt), it is about 2 feet by four feet. Has hardware cloth for the sides and floor. Do rabbits need a "nesting box", and can this one big pen be sufficient for two females?
Figure I will get a separate pen for the male, and have some meat rabbits, but I will probably be the only meat eater on that one.
More questions to come..
Help a fella out.

Deebo,
I always kept my breeding stock in separate hutches. The meat rabbits went into a "butcher" hutch together. You will need a box for the pregnant doe to make a nest in, to have her litter in a private place. Add a little hay, and she will pull her own fur to complete the soft landing spot. When breeding, put the doe in the buck's cage and watch .... it only takes a minute or two and remover her. Does have been known to use their teeth to castrate males who have entered her domain. your herd can expand very quick with their 28-31 day gestation cycle.

Oh Baby! Watchman is right on everything he said. We are running two bucks and 3 does now down from 6 breeding pairs. I have litters popping all the time.
And yes, stress will cause the doe to kill her litter. A barking dog, a first time litter, etc. But they usually bounce right back. Our rabbits are used to the Pyr barking at night, so that doesn't stress them anymore. But I lost two litters in the spring due to a coon prowling and the dog trying to catch it. Once the coon was eliminated, peace and tranquility reigned in the kingdom once more and the rabbits became fruitful and multiplied.

Another tidbit...
We run cages side by side so the females can cuddle through the wire and socialize, but a female will kill another females litter, especially if the second one is expecting also.
And you know that if the female throws her legs behind her straight out during breeding she is ready for breeding and is accepting of the male. Contrary to popular belief, not every copulation takes. It may look good, but if she isn't in the right position, it's just fun and games.

DO NOT breed rabbits!!! There are more than enough rabbits in the world. If you want rabbits just drive down to M.T. Acres (only about a 4 hour drive for you) and I will give you all the rabbits you want. We have those little bitty ones that are about the size of a baseball and the great big desert hares that run about 40 MPH and are the size of a medium sized dog, and everything in between. When you look out at sunset, it looks like the ground is alive from all the damn rabbits!
Mrs Inor and I have taken to calling the road into town "the rabbit road" because of the damn things! We used to try to not hit them when driving but that proved to be impossible and just made us look like a couple of drunks driving down the road. So now we have just gotten used to the unique "thump-thump" sound when we run over them. That and the occasional "crunch" when we get the bones just right.

Inor, I'm ashamed of you. You should eat what you kill. I bet you wouldn't waste that food in a SHTF scenario. You think just because you're rich and famous you can kill creatures and waste the Food? There are humane ways to deal with the rabbits. You need to put electric rabbit wire fence along the road to help control them. The old folks used to plant enough food for the rabbits and themselves. Just because I'm 26 years old and live in my mom's basement doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about.

By all means... Send the old fuckers on out to M.T Acres and we'll net all the rabbits they want!

No, you're just selling rabbits. What occurs afterwards is not your concern. Keeps the hugged bear kiss face types appeased.
If an older guy shows by himself and wants a couple rabbits, I figure they are stewpot bound.
If a mom and/or dad show with kids and they compare colorings, markings, and temperament then it's pet time. But we NEVER advertise them as meat rabbits.

I don't know a damned thing about raising the furry varmints, but we used to buy some fat 8-10 lb. ones from a guy my wife worked with....they were tasty indeed. Easy as heck to clean, and they were pretty cheap too.

Well...since you asked...
The oldest granddaughter got a bugout bag sized for her. Made by red rock gear. There was a dealer there, and I found out red rock has a lifetime warranty. So I had two RR bags, one that had a broken zipper and one where the nylon cover had a spot where the cover had separated from the stitching. So the dealer took the bags and let us exchange them at full retail for anything we wanted. Just pay the difference if there was any. So, she gets a new backpack for travel and i get a bigger truck bag for about $30 total.
She and my wife got a huge ferro/magnesium rod combo with wooden handle. Burned through lots of cotton balls last night...
Wifey also bought two super pails of dehydrated meats and fruits. Jury is out on that deal, but her money. She did get them for about half of what I saw on the net though.
We attended two seminars, and I won two 24 hour mre packs and she won some pre packaged sutures.
All in all it was a fun weekend. I won enough to more than pay for our tickets, made a couple worthwhile contacts, and scored pretty good on the packs.
While I.m rattling, I'm gonna plug the red rock gear. It's not 5.11 quality, but it's not that price either. My truck bag has been drug around between vehicles and hotels for about two years, and that on e little spot was all that was wrong. More looks than function because it was covered by a cordura flap when closed.
My wife busted the zipper on the other bag cramming g it too full and jerking on the tab trying to close it. But the bag had been carried daily for three years.
So no complaints there.

Heck my yard is like an expressway rabbits, though one built a nest in a blue spruce just off my back porch. My Chocolate lab would stand there all the time looking at these baby bunnies with her Heine hanging out of the tree. I don't think she realized what they were, she loves chasing the big rabbits into the woods. Not as much as she likes chasing the turkey flocks though (she did get one finally). She was disappointed when they were gone, she still pokes her head in every once in awhile and looks.
So you and Deebo are welcome to com trap all the live ones you want.

I'm wanting to expand out, but the Warlord is balking. I thinned out to 5 breeding does, which keep us and another family in meat as a supplement, but not enough if we really need to depend on them for meat.
In May we were selling butcher rabbits for $10 each, but at the auction I paid $13 for a breeding pair, and bought some young ones for $3.
I'd like to expand out to twenty does. I have the room, but with me being g gone during g the week, wife doesn't want t to care for that many during g the winter.

Thanks She turned 5 this May, I can't wait till her brother calms down he will be 3 this Dec. He is a Brittany, the only good thing to come from my Crazy Ex, she would wig out anytime it chewed on something as a puppy, so when we split I kept him because as I told her he ate mostly my stuff, I couldn't stand to think of him getting sent to the pound if he shewed on something of hers. He grows on you lol though it makes my lab jealous when he wants some petting, she will go grab a toy to lure him away and he always falls for it.
