Any fan of old Monty Python movies will likely remember the taunt “… your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!” But what does this silliness mean?
Elderberries (Sambucus canadensis) have been used to make a pungent-scented fruit wine for centuries, and they’re found throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Lots of Elderberries in my neighborhood. One of my neighbors is quite good at making wine.

Both my grandfathers made an occasional batch wine for medicinal purposes of course. Id like to try it one of these days.

I never tried a elderberry
I know they can take up a huge amount of space and my grandfather used to make wine from them
also in history they were carried by doctors who made house calls
