I am told the Century arms AK's are ones to avoid. Was I told wrong by a gunsmith?

Well true at one point...
But now they make a American made AK milled receiver that has proven so far to be a pure joy to shoot. Id buy one good price and well made.
One of my family has one.
I think its this one - http://centuryarms.biz/proddetail.asp?prod=RI2398-N&cat=134

I suppose its like Taurus hard to shake a bad reputation. I can only judge the one I have shoot. I like it! and the price was right.

The Taurus bad rep was well deserved. Their Customer service left a lot to be desired too.

You have a FAL?.or Taurus?.mine (L1A1) shot well it just looked really cheesy.as far as Taurus goes, their rep may be bad and every firearm manufacturer may have a good or bad cred but,my two Tauri have been really good to me.my first 9mm was a PT92AF and my edc is a PT709.I have no issues with them other than an extra PT709 mag I bought had the spring in backwards and was an fte on the last round and would not lock back.both of those have a lot of ammo thru them of all brands and they seem to eat anything.
I do know that there are some others here who may disagree with me.I really have not had any issues with our Tauri,S&W's,Rugers,Stars,Savage,Stag, and our 2 Mossbergs,SCCY,and my lone Llama .380.
We may not have as many firearms as some but,we deal with what we have just fine.

I own neither. But my dad had Taurus PT45 that never once burped Id carry it. Some Taurus revolvers were good and some were not. A bad couple of runs will make it hard to shake the rap!

I sold quite A few of the Taurus 1911's and have not heard a bad thing about them. Always here good things about the revolvers too especially the judge.
