Got prepped today for taters 2018

    We dug out tater patch today, . . . 5 ea 60 ft rows, . . . 1 ea 50 ft row.

Counting the clinging dirt, . . . there's 401 more or less pounds of taters for us this year. First time I've planted taters in 20 years or so.

Plants came up to the top of my jeans pockets, . . . and I'm 6'1, . . . never saw plants like these.

Gonna have to learn how to can taters now.

    May God bless,
    Dwight

    Nahh, . . . I ain't canning 400 lbs of taters, . . . venison I would do . . . beef I would do, . . . pork or chicken I'd have to think about, . . . taters?? no way........

But I will be canning some just as much for the experience as any other reason.

Some of them will find their way to some of our folks at church, . . .

    May God bless,

    Hey - nice harvest!
Are they good keepers? Are you going to try & keep some over winter in a root celler setup? Buried to almost the top bins with straw mounded over the lids keeps them from freezing, easy access, etc. I've not tried that personally, but a friend does it that way (back in Nebraska), her carrots too. Might be fun to try it - incase you ever need to keep a large amount stored up for a long winter.

Canned taters are the BEST! They are even better than fresh. There! I said it! Yes, canned taters are even more potatoy than fresh!

Mid-February, canned taters fried with garlic and a LOT of cheese and some bacon, man, you do not get better than that! Add in a couple half-ears of corn that you flash froze about now and you have the perfect meal in my arrogant opinion.

Great harvest! I need to learn how to grow those like that. I don't have as much land to plant. Not to mention my black thumb.

My brother told me back in the spring that I should get near 1 pound per foot of plants if they were originally planted about a foot apart.

I also asked him about fertilizing the things, . . . he told me to use the formula of 400 # per acre of 12-12-12 would be just fine.

I did the math, . . . found out that for my 60 ft row, . . . a red Folgers coffee can 30.5 oz size full of fertilizer would be perfect. I took a pop can I cut the top out of and after making a trench about 4 or 5 inches deep, . . . I sprinkled the fertilizer in the trench.

Next I used my foot to shovel about an inch or 1 1/2 inches of dirt on top of the fertilizer, . . . then planted the taters and covered them with about 2 inches of topsoil.

Other than that, . . . all I did was wait until they were about 12 to 15 inches tall, . . . and I hilled em up on both sides.

Last, . . . I kept the weeds killed out until the last few weeks, . . . where it could not make a difference, . . .

Growing taters ain't really hard, . . . just gotta be persistent in what you do.

    May God bless,
    Dwight
