Classic Blade: Schrade 498 Fixed Blade Hunting Knife

This Schrade 498 fixed blade hunting knife has sentimental value to me. (Photo © Russ Chastain)

I was struck by its graceful shape and attractive, practical handle so I took the old blade home with me.

My only USA made Schrade fixed blade has a similar shaped and size blade, but the handle (still Staglon) is a little different, with colored spacers behind the cross guard and under the butt cap.
It is marked USA 153UH, for Uncle Henry.
It was used, abused, and rusted when I got it for free 20 years ago.
I cleaned her up, put a nice edge on it with my Lanskey System sharpener, and wear it into town on occasion.

Not worth too much on the market, but she's mine. And, we're both a little beat up and rough around the edges.

I remember that knife style, it was sold for a long time, but I am sure that it is out of production now.

If it is, its just one more thing that went out of style, and died away. My memories are turning into a graveyard.

But that happens when you get old.
