    Building a better rat trap

We have been having some problems with packrats in the Chicken Yard and around the Meat Chickens. So I remembered this idea for controlling rodents. I do not recall where I saw it so unfortunately, I cannot give due credit. But we decided to try it by the chickens and in the gardens.

It is just the poison blocks hung on a piece of stainless fence wire. The rats/mice/voles go in through the legs on the bottom and eat the poison hanging down. But the chickens/dogs etc. cannot get to it, so it is safe to use anywhere.

I might need to chop the legs off a little bit? We put them out today. I'll check them in a week or so. If the rats are not finding the poison, I'll shorten the legs a bit and try it again. None of the joints are glued so I can make modifications as necessary.

    Nice idea.

Cats and dogs may still eat dead vermin. Be careful of your pets.

Inor, what brand/type of poison are you using I don't recognize it by sight?

I had a vole problem last fall and got some granular green stuff at TSC. In a 5-lb size it was the most economical. Active ingredient is Bromethalin. Not sure you could get that to work in a trap of that design?

Maybe Dwight has some suggestions too?

I found this article that lists 13 homemade baits most are non-toxic. These would be good if concerns about pets or children are present. Might mix some up next time a mouse is in the house.

For in the barns and basement I'm still using the 5-gal pail drowning traps.

I'm not sure that what I use is this exact formula . . .

But it is the same little green block looking stuff with a hole in the middle . . . https://www.amazon.com/Eaton-709-PN-.../dp/B007ICK5RG

    Boogers come in . . . get a snack . . . go off and croak . . . ain't seen no more.

    Makes me happy.

    May God bless,
    Dwight

Very similar to what I use. I put them under my hunting camper and in the barn.

Like Dwight said, they come with a hole in the block of poison and I just run the fence wire through the hole.
