    Apple Butter

I'm getting things ready to make some old fashion apple butter. Planning to cook it outside in a copper kettle once I get one. Anyone have any pointers? Maybe watching there grandmother make it?? If only I would have been smart enough to watch my grandmother make it. I have made it in the crock pot and it was very good. Bad thing is I was at the point where I thought I could remember everything ingredients but that ship has sailed. Any input would be a great help

Apples, lots of sugar! spices (cinnamon, allspice, cloves), water, a touch of lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, pectin and Mrs Slippy wearing one of my old cotton dress shirts and no pants, just a skimpy pair of laced red undies working up a nice sweat in the kitchen...

Oh, I forgot a pinch of salt..

How long have you wore red laced undies?

Sounds silly, . . . and I don't know for sure where the recipe is, . . . but some of the best apple butter I ever ate came out of a crock pot, . . . left on all day, . . . on low, . . . and the only other ingredient I recall, . . . cinnamon hot drops.

    Man was it good.

    I'll look for the recipe, . . . if I find it, . . . I'll put it up for y'all.

    May God bless,
    Dwight

Mrs Inor makes the greatest apple butter every year. I have no idea how she does it or what the recipe is, all I can say is does NOT make it outside! It makes the house smell SO GOOD! Also, she does not use a copper pot. She uses the same stainless steel canning pot that she uses for all of her jellies and jams. Making it outside is like trophy hunting deer; you waste the BEST parts.

Cook that sucker up inside and enjoy the smell for at least 3-4 days.

    FOUND IT:

    Well, . . . it had more ingredients than I recalled, . . .

10 cups of apples, cooked and drained

    3/4 cup of Brown Sugar

1/2 cup Red Hot Cinnamon Hot Drops

    3 teaspoons cinnamon

    3/4 teaspoon all spice

We put this on the first time and let it cook all night on "Low" in the crock pot, . . . second batch, we started up and went to work, . . .

    Both batches turned out great.

We have some apples on our apple trees this year, . . . so I think we will probably do that again this year. It was some of the best apple butter I've ever eaten, and it did not require a lot of stirring in a copper kettle.

I also have to shy away from that, . . . my son has a copper allergy, . . . and we want to be able to share anything we do here.

    May God bless,
    Dwight

    AMISH CROCK POT APPLE BUTTER

6 lbs. mixed variety apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
    1 3/4 cups apple cider
    2 cups sugar
    2 1/2 cups brown sugar
    1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 tablespoon cinnamon
    3/4 tsp. ground cloves
    1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Place all ingredients in the crock pot and mix well. Cook on the high setting for 2 hours, stirring periodically. Turn the crock to low and cook 7-8 more hours. Puree with an immersion blender if desired for a smoother consistency.

Going to try this with the red hots, sounds like it would taste great in the apple butter.
