Yum!! for under $19 bucks a 5th I'm very happy with the flavor I can detect the smallest hint of vanilla. Im still searching for the hint of pear the label refers to. This has a gentle bite on the rock. I'm going to have to smoke some ice cubes this weekend and try this on a smokey rock!

Worth every bit of $19.00

I do not know Tulsa. That, and Littlerock, are about the only major cities in North America that I have not been to (that I can think of).

And Alaska. I have never been to Alaska. But even if a gig came up in Alaska, I would probably turn it down because I want to see Alaska first as a real person, not on a business trip. I have been going back and forth with Mrs Inor for a few years about going to Alaska. She wants to see it from a cruise ship. I want to fly there and rent a truck for a couple weeks and drive around and camp wherever the wind blows us.

Tonight's beer is one I have never had before - Voodoo Ranger from New Belgium. It is pretty tasty stuff. I am not sure if it is a seasonal or if they make it all the time. I had never heard of it before but it is very good. Of course, being 9% doesn't hurt either.

If you can find a BBQ that does smoked bologna, give that a try. The only place I have ever seen it is in Oklahoma City. But it is freakin' out of this world, especially with a good hot BBQ sauce.

I love a good IPA. My suggestion on your first AK trip-

Fly into Anchorage, look it over for a day. Rent a car, drive up to Denali. On the way you will probably see Beluga whales, mountain sheep and goats, maybe moose. Stop at the roadhouses on the way for drinks n lunch. Go to the silver mine. When you get to Denali rent a room at the lodge. The next day take the bus trip through Denali park. If your lucky and its clear you will see the majestic mountain up close. You'll see moose, caribou, grizzlies and your wife should love you when it's all done.

hag what is a "alligator char" on the barrels the label refers to?

They have four different stages of charring the barrel, 1is very lightly blackened, 4is charred until the wood turns black and starts to peel and flake. It lets the bourbon soak in and out of the barrel better as it sweats and contracts and gives a stronger flavor. Not alot of distilleries use the#4 char. When we dump the barrels after its finished aging, we have to screen it to get the loose char out. It definitely makes a better bourbon in my opinion (which could be slightly biased lol)

Excellent! So #4 is the alligator char. Too cool! I've really been enjoying this bottle I can't believe it took me so long to revisit this bourbon. I'm really liking the flavor. The 5 to 8 years aging really shows up in the flavor. And now that I know you had a hand in its production makes it even better. Thanks hag this bourbon has been put on my buy often list!

but honestly the taste does not justify the price.
It is just glorified Jim Beam now before any Jim fans get pissy I am not saying that to be mean but saying cause it's made at the Jim distillery.

Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace and Knob Creek are so far the only KY bourbons I have found where I can buy a bottle, and I will enjoy it; I don't have to 'hunting,' for the kind I prefer, all of them will do.

I don't generally like Jim Beam.

Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace and Knob Creek are so far the only KY bourbons I have found where I can buy a bottle, and I will enjoy it; I don't have to 'hunting,' for the kind I prefer, all of them will do.

I don't generally like Jim Beam.

I try to stay with KY distilleries.

I like black label Beam.. for a budget bourbon I enjoy it.

My new go to is bourbon Wild turkey from the "hag" distillery. For under 19 bucks I've been enjoying the heck out of that this past weekend.

I found an unknown bottle frozen stuck in my beer refrigerator, now I just need to get it out to see what it is!

A good go to 'cheap,' has been Lexington Bourbon.

Nearly full bottle and its not too bad for a cheap plastic bottle bourbon. I think I bought it last time I threw my back out or during a rough time . . . I can't remember.

Raging Bitch is awesome! Another one to look for from Flying Dog is a seasonal around Christmas. I cannot recall the exact name, but it is something like Black Dog Stout or some such thing. Our own Black Dog from OTP roasts the coffee beans to flavor it. It is really good. The bottle even has Black Dog's logo on it.

Thanks for the head's up on the Mission Breweries!

Okay, I do not want to start a fight with this one so forgive me if I offend... Every time I go to northern CA, everybody always says "You have to try Steam Whistle! It is the greatest beer ever." I have had it and it is okay. But I did not think it was anything special. What say you?

I may have posted this before but....

History

Originally known as “aqua vitae” or “water of life” for it’s healing properties, the first recorded reference to the substance is found in the Scottish Exchequer Rolls of 1494. The following, “Eight bolls of malt to Friar John Cor wherewith to make aqua vitae,” was the equivalent of several hundred bottles of whisky in today’s standards. This distilled beverage was used as a treatment for all kinds of ailments, with many of its users noticing the warm, calming sensation upon “treatment.”

Scotland’s King James IV was recorded as purchasing whisky from the local barber upon a visit to Dundee in 1506. That he purchased it from the barber would not have raised any eyebrows in that time period. “In 1505, the Guild of Surgeon Barbers in Edinburgh was granted a monopoly over the manufacture of aqua vitae – a fact that reflects the spirits perceived medicinal properties as well as the medicinal talents of the barbers.”

Royalty and the clergy were not the only ones to enjoy whisky,

Wild turkey has a brand called forgiven that my mom accidentally made some years ago when she was working in the tank room and accidentally put a ten year old bourbon in with the single barrel rye. They almost ran it down the drain until Eddie Russell tasted it and decided to bottle it. It turned out to be a huge hit and they made another run of it intentionally a second time. It's a bourbon and rye hybrid. It's a little pricey but VERY GOOD. Eddie called it forgiven in reference to momma's **** up

KALAMAZOO, MI -- A new distillery in Kalamazoo will start offering its products statewide next month.

Green Door Distilling Co. will start distributing throughout Michigan in April, the company said in a press release.

"Our need for adventure and the desire to build a legacy in Kalamazoo led us on this amazing journey," said Josh Cook, co-founder of Green Door Distilling.

The company plans to start distributing its First Ascent Whiskey, High Point Honey Whiskey and Abandoned Gin,

First taste is warm at room temp sipped very slowly. Very smooth right out of the gate. The spice of the rye comes right thru then the oak and hints of carmel and vanilla and I'll call it a hint of citrus all which me not being a expert taste tester can pick out. So far this is a pretty special bottle for my blue collar po folk workin mans budget. The story about hags mom makes it a real special treat!

And it smells gooood!

Tick tock

Tick tock

Gave it a little time to melt a bit of the rock...

First taste is.....

Oh yeah baby thats some damn good shit right there!

The water opened up and intensified the flavors to the 3rd power. The spice of the rye is still out front.

So far I like it... I like it alot!

If your willing to spend 50 bucks on Knob Creek I would bet you'll really appreciate this even though its not technically bourbon. I like this better than knob creek.

I like this better than Buffalo Trace which is currently my favorite and is in the $25.00 range. My other favorite in the $25.00 range is Rebel Reserve. My new found very enjoyable budget booze is Wild Turkey which was $18.00 I really enjoyed that bottle last weekend.

This bottle was batch 303. Does that mean its the 303rd batch made?

I have got to put a distillery trip in Kentucky in my future. I would love to get a signed bottle of this to put up for a keep sake. Pretty darn neat story and history. We are lucky to have you on OTP!

Tonight's beer is Moon Juice from SanTan Breweries in Chandler, AZ.

I admit it. I am a sucker for beers I have never tried before, especially if they have a weird name. I saw this at the grocery store and could not pass it up. Usually my weird beers are okay but not great, but every once in awhile I discover one that is outstanding, like KP. This is another one of those. It is not citrusy (like a lot of the IPAs in this area). Nor is it overly hoppy. It is a great balance but is filling. I will definitely be buying more of these.

I don't know why breweries add fruit to beer.

Our local grocery store has started to carry some more esoteric beers. That is where I found this one. Otherwise, when I go into Tucson to visit my mom I stop by a place that has a HUGE beer section with stuff I have never heard of and also some of my favorites from when we were living in MN.

when I want good bourbon I buy good bourbon.
When I want one of the best oak flavored whiskeys I buy any Jack. Some people just don't honestly care for it and that's fine.
However lots of people that don't enjoy it are drinking it wrong and change their mind when enjoyed right.

when done right this is a good description.
key let the ice or even better smoked ice work for you.
Don't drown it just let it chill and mellow.
Or suck it up buttercup and enjoy the burn.
https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/jack-daniels-tennessee-whiskey/
Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt
Nose: Light with plenty of sweetness. There are hints of dry spice and oily nuts, a touch of smoke.

Palate: Quite smooth and soft with notes of banana milkshake, a mixed nut note, a touch of caramel with crème anglaise.

Finish: Sweet with a little cereal sweetness and toasty oak.

I need a true Jack supporter medal !
Do we have any medals for booze ?
we all deserve that one.

Yeah she packs a punch! I did not do a warm taste test it went right in the frezzer and is nicely chilled. First taste no rock wow lots of flavor and a stearn bite. Very tasty though and under 23 bucks for a 5th.

After a few sips I put a rock in for a little melt to see how she opens up the flavors.

After some melt sip and sip again. Lots of oak and spice and a hint of vanilla. Very good and the price is right.

The bourbon snobs over at MGO claim the Woodford is good. If I tried it at your place it was a while back and I can not remember it.

This 101 is definitely HOT! I think over all I liked the regular wild turkey better but its still to early to make a judgment. I'm on a third glass and dropped a cherry smoked rock in it. The smoked rock is very good in this bourbon. Tomorrow I'll try it in a cocktail.

Ok room temp neat sweet smooth start on the lips and warms up quick I get a vanilla oak taste right away and it goes down hot keep in mind its 116.8 proof and this is not meant to be tasted neat unless you are a heat fan.
Chilled on a rock for about 3 min increased the sweet hit to the lips took the first wave of heat off really opened up the flavor and I expect it to open more as the cube melts. Now the heat hits once its passes the throat and stays warm all the way down. Im getting a nutty after taste. This is very tasty never been good with flavor description sorry but I like it!
Remember being cask strength every bottle will have different heat with different start and finishes.

It is a sign do not hesitate! I'm embarrassed that I have not dabbled in Wild Turkey in the last 25 to 30 years... shame on me!

I can't remember how long it's been either. I think I thought it was too hot, but I was young.

Quality is up there with Buffalo trace and some others on my 10 list price wise it goes on my special occasion only list.
In other words this will be in my cabinet a very long time to sip on now and then verse Buffalo that I would finish in a week.
I have several here I sip on about once a year and enjoy every drop only because rhe cost prevents me from running out for another right away.
The buzz is excellent the glass you see I have had about 6 sips and a 1/4 warm shot test and I feel great and will get about 30 to 45 min out of sipping that glass.

Well yes in my opinon the 101 Im drinking is hot compared to the regular wild turkey 81 proof I had last weekend or so.
I really enjoyed the 81 proof straight. The flavor was very good for budget bourbon. The 101 is hotter but the flavor from longer aging is is more pronounced.

The Forgiven is spectacular its not hot and a pleasure to drink straight. Im really enjoying that slowly....

If you like the Buffalo Trace you will like/love the Forgiven and I think you would like the 81 proof Wild Turkey. The 81 proof is only 18.00 bucks here in Meatchicken compared to about 25 bucks for the Buffalo Trace. The 101 Wild Turkey may be too hot for you but Id still try that too. If its to hot straight its make a dandy Bourbon and Coke mixed drink which is what Im enjoying at this momment.

The rare breed is one of my favorites! I have an acquired taste for the barrel proof bourbon. My first ever buzz was barrel proof 14 year old out of a mason jar. It had been filled directly out of the barrel from the warehouse and still had pieces of char floating in it! Them were good drinking days!

Its 80% taste and 20% memories of 10 year old christmas decanters of Beam that draw me to black label Beam over that black label Tennessee swill.

You could put Rosie Odonnel in a bikini for a beam ad and I'd still drink black label Beam over that black label swill from Tennessee hahahahahaha!

My bourbon endeavors.

Angel's Envy 4.9/5
Blanton's 4.4/5
Knob Creek 3.9/5
Eagle Rare 3.7/5

I have a bottle of Booker's that I haven't tasted yet...I'm not a noob in bourbon but I stick with the above.

Any experience with Booker's out there? Ice/no ice/?

I like to sample new booze several ways...

Warm and neat.
Freezer chilled neat.
Then on a rock or a splash of water.

I've aways kept what Im drinking at the time in the freezer.
Never notitced a issue. Nothing better to me than straight from the bottle out of the frezzer and down the hatch.

Good question for "hag"

So freezing changing the taste yes and no all I have ever noticed is that it takes the first burn off allowing you to let it sit in your mouth and let the flavors warm up.
It is the same principle as on the rocks. Notice how that changes the flavor with chill and dilution.
Chilling the bottle is a good way to enjoy it wither neat or longer on the rocks with a slow melt verse warm whiskey on ice

The freezer is my favorite way to chill, but to freeze it is impossible. Rubber duck is right that the cold will slow the heat, but to me it's better than on the rocks because the melting adds water and that will screw up the flavor big time for my taste buds, which is why I like the freezer. Some people do like it room temperature though. On the 101, some of the guys will put one part water two parts bourbon, to take the edge off a little. To each their own, but straight outta the freezer is my favorite
